Calories with low sugar

After a trip to the doctors for a check up with blood tests, it has been determined that my blood sugar is high (not diabetic high, but close) and I need to lose about 16lbs. I knew I needed to lose weight and have started logging what I eat. However, I'm struggling to understand where all my sugar is coming from. I have made a decision to eat as much fruit and vegetables as advised, but find that most of my sugar intake, for today at least, is logged from carrots, cabbage, oranges and pears. Can this be considered "good" sugar? If indeed there is such a thing.

Did your doctor tell you to reduce total sugar or sugar per meal, or just to lose weight?

A high sugar diet doesn't cause diabetes or pre-diabetes. Are you assuming you must have had a high sugar diet?

In general, (as I understand it, I'm not a doctor or RD) losing weight and becoming more active are the best ways to avoid moving up into diabetic status. Some people do benefit from a lower carb diet (though this is not universal). Did your doctor give you any other instructions?

The recommendation was to eat more fruit and vegetables. I knew I needed to lose weight and my weakness was always chocolate and crisps. Also not to cut out carbs altogether but reduce these because of the "hidden" sugars in carbs. To be honest I already ate a reasonable amount of fruit, but I am a little confused as to the daily amount of sugar consumed, just from fresh fruit.

Fruit is pretty much sugar, fiber, and nutrients. Carbs don't have "hidden" sugars. Carbs are one of the three macronutrients, and sugar is a type of carb.

If your doctor told you to eat more fruit, but also told you to eat less carbs because of hidden sugars, I'm sorry to say your doctor doesn't have a good grasp of nutrition science and diet. Because those two things contradict each other. Can you get a referral to a registered dietitian?

Perhaps start a new thread with a title asking for experiences reversing pre-diabetes. I know many here have reversed prediabetes and many others are managing their diabetes.

Thanks for that kimny72, much appreciated

jezwadd, you need to do everything you can to reverse your high blood sugar. Diet and exercise are key. Please see a nutritionist. Your life could literally depend on it.
