My grandfather's neighbor's son is a doctor. He says it's bunk. Especially that, "it can slow your metabolism at more than 16 hours," part. Just, no.

I do IF naturally. Some days I'm at 14:10, some days I'm 16:8. I've done that my whole life - more than 60 years. Pretty hard to prove if it had anything to do with my long-term health.

How is your guy measuring this?

Really?? Okay...well I'll have to tell my moms boss because shes doing the same thing.
And I dont know, I haven't talked to him personally, my moms boss told me that's what he told her.

Isn't not eating for 12-16 hours just pretty normal eating schedule for most adults?
I generally stop eating by 9 pm and don't eat again until sometime between 8-noon. That is 11-15 hours. A lot of people I know eat like that.

Excess calories cause you to gain fat. A calorie deficit causes you to lose fat.
If you change your diet to lower calorie foods than you previously ate you will lose weight if the total calories are right. You will not lose if you eat too many calories for your activity level even if the food is nutritious.
If eating on a particular schedule causes you to eat less than your maintenance calorie level then you will lose weight.

Diet sodas, unsweetened teas, etc do not cause you to gain weight and will not harm you unless you are allergic to something in them.

I recommend setting a reasonable calorie goal. MFP will give you one if you enter your information. Eat that amount of calories on whatever schedule you feel like. Log your food and drinks.

Now I really want to know what the original post claimed and what the mom's boss's son's doctor said that turned out to be a lie! This is better than a soap opera!

I know, I wish I had quoted it.

The mom's boss's son is in the medical field.

He said people who do IF have better long term health and that it balances hormones and leads to healthy weight and that 12 or 13 hours is the longest you should fast because longer than 16 hours will slow the metabolism.

He also said that eating 'clean healthy food' automatically regulated body weight and caused the body to shed excess pounds (without any reference to the number of calories consumed).

The book I'm reading "You - On a Diet" stated something to the effect that not eating past 12 hours will decrease you metabolism by 40%. The book was co-written by Dr. Oz. The good Dr. Oz wouldn't lie to me, would he? The book was written in 2009. That might have been before he started peddling snake oil on TV every day. Most of the book sounds logical, but that part stuck out to me since the latest fad is IF.

But how does In vitro Fertilisation do all these things? >:)

Exactly the same way intermittent fasting does it.

    Duh.

Dr. Oz would do whatever to make a buck.

And the "sounds logical" really doesn't matter. The question is is it backed up by actual science. I doubt you will find any reputable studies that show anything leads to a reduction of metabolism by 40%. That's a drastic drop and could not be achieved by IF, or pretty much anything (outside of a HUGE loss of weight).

I too have just read the comments to find out what the OP said.
in reply to this ....Iv naturally done IF since I was around 9 years old and I still managed to reach 17 and half stone by the age of 26 so it hardly leads to a healthy weight INLESS calories are also taken in to account.
and dont even get me started on health and hormones lol

Oh, if only that were true, I never would have weighed 210 pounds! I used to be one of those who was really focused on how "healthy" what I ate had to be. Didn't solve my weight problems.

Yeah I joined slimming world, back in the day of green weeks. As much rice, pasta and potatoes as you want so long as your also eating plenty of veg and certain fruits..... I gained 6lb and was told it's because I didn't eat enough!

Clearly they hadn't seen just how much of those "healthy" foods I could eat at a meal
