One week is way too soon to expect to see the scale reflect your effort. Check out the Most Helpful Posts pinned to the top of each board, lots of great info there. You need to be patient and take the long view!2

Long story short ... when you use muscles you havent been using, they go into "get ready for use" mode and swell with water.
Weight GAIN is normal when yo start to excersize...
... start to see the seperation between weight loss and fat loss and the entire journey will be more rearding3 -
You're going to be very disappointed if you think 1 week makes a difference all the time. Losing weight, and becoming fit, is a very long process. Sometimes the scale may not move for weeks at a time. It doesn't mean anything and it certainly doesn't mean you're doing anything wrong. I've seen the scale go the wrong way for an entire week then all of a sudden drop 5-7lbs. There are so many things that affect body weight. Water retention is the biggest one, waste retention is another. I'm a guy and I notice water retention issues after new workouts, tough workouts, or even after eating higher sodium meals. Women tend be even more sensitive to water weight gain, especially at certain times of the month. Pick one day a week when you are rested, same time of the day, usually in the morning after you've used the restroom and weigh yourself in and log it. Don't do it every day, because the fluctuations will drive you bonkers.
Remember, weight loss should be a long term goal. Set yourself at a loss rate of around 1lb per week, but no more than 2lbs per week (and that's extreme) but don't expect the scale to actually go down 2lbs per week. Over the period of a year you may average 1-2lbs/week loss rate if you are consistent. Gaining weight takes a lot of time, most of us put on the extra weight over years, we shouldn't expect it all to come off in a matter of weeks.
Food for thought (pun intended!)3 -
Thank you! My body feels different already...tighter, stomach is flatter so I was surprised to see I hadn’t lost weight. Thanks for this!1

If you were to weigh yourself twice a day for a week (I don’t recommend this), you would see wild fluctuations of 1-3 lbs (sometimes more) in your weight due to all sorts of things (sodium, bowel movements, water retention, menstrual cycle, etc). Don’t be discouraged by seeing a .1 lb difference in two data points a whole week apart! You may still have an overall downward trend, but can’t see it due to daily fluctuations. If you have set up a good plan, stick with it consistently and give it a few months.
Weigh yourself weekly in the same conditions (many people do Monday morning, completely naked, before breakfast, and after using the bathroom). I personally won’t weigh myself if I’ve just had a salty meal over the weekend (even if I stayed within my calories) because I know it takes a few days to see the water weight leave, and I don’t want to discourage myself.4 -
Don't place so much important on the numbers on a scale.0

Keep at it! If you keep making good decisions the weight will come off. I know it’s frustrating when you work hard all week and the scale doesn’t seem to reflect that but if you keep at it, it will.
Also, I weigh myself every morning and track my weight in the app Happy Scale. It gives me a moving average of my weight which is a much more complete picture than stepping on the scale once a week when there are so many factors that can effect your weight fluctuations by up to 5 lbs!3 -
I can fluctuate 2-3 pounds per day in either direction. Sometimes I weigh in on a bad day and my weight has gone up from the week before. Then another week it will be down significantly. We are running a marathon, not a sprint, so don't let a week or two discourage you.
And at the end of the day, exercise is important for a lot more than weight loss. Improving your cardiovascular health is one of the most important things you can do for overall health. So don't let this discourage you from that.1 -
I can have a 2lb weight gain from a good strength training workout. You need to be more patient. It sucks, but that's the way it is. I weigh daily, and you can see how much it fluctuates:

I'm sure there has to be something in your diet that is holding you back. try cutting it out completely and you will start to see the weight fall off. I promise6
