I dislike my body shape so much. This is not the way I want to look like. I want the illusion of an hour glass figure. How should I train in the gym? There’s days I want to give up because I feel I will always look this way and it sucks :(

What is your height and weight?

Do you have any character traits or accomplishments that are unrelated to your body? After all, some day you will be 40, 50, 60, 70 with various flaws and disappointments that go with each decade. Do you expect to be hopeless and desperate throughout?

You don't give your stats or your age or goal weight. It's hard to help with no info. What calorie goal did MFP give you? How long have you been trying to hit it? Do you weigh and measure everything you eat and drink on a digital food scale? Watching your calorie intake will make you lose weight, exercising will help with your muscle tone and shape. So, if you want help you'll need to explain a bit more. Luck.

Yes, well weight loss will help.

Log food like it's your job. Learn about nutrition. It's a long game, so it's going to take a little time. Consistency and time, that's the ticket.

I can’t tell you how to train.

But I want to comment on this- hope. If you’re basically healthy you can train and get a lot of, maybe all of, what you’re looking for.

The gym is where I learned incrementalism. Incrementalism will open a lot of doors. Look on YouTube. Have you posted this on the MFP Fitness board?

A good thing about just starting out, is almost anything will get you some benefits. In a few weeks you will notice your energy and endurance increasing. You will get stronger. No the body you want will not magically appear in 3 months.

Give yourself plenty of time with the training learning curve. Actually the leaning never ends. Study, there’s a lot out there on training. A lot of science, some junk. Study hard, learn to know the good stuff when you see it. There is plenty of reason for hope. What you want to do is doable and you can. Good luck.

I don't see anything in the picture that should make you feel hopeless and desperate, you are carrying a little extra fat, that will come off with patience and effort, it's not the be all and end all of your life. There's a great thread here....

The illusion of an hourglass figure is achieved with a well-strung girdle.
The fact of an hourglass figure is achieved by following the advice given above by tinkerbellang83.
  • If I can add something to this, I would say to try and find an activity that you love and start with that. When you say there are days you want to give up at the gym, first of all - everyone has those days. I know I did. I was going to the gym 4-5 days a week, logging my food, and being meticulous about my diet and I lost weight but I was miserable doing it. Personally, I started cardio boxing classes that I LOVE and it makes me want to actually go and workout (punching things is a huge stress reliever, haha) and in the process I started to notice a difference in my body. Don’t get discouraged, it takes time. Try to focus on small victories and that will lead you to the bigger picture. You got this!!

The thing is my stomach hangs down. Which obviously will result in loose skin over time :(

Mine hangs down too. I'm 5ft2 and weigh 210. I'd love to be at 150!!! You're almost at my goal.

It's not what you want to become, it's who you must become.

Well then, are you watching your calories? Are you weighing and measuring everything on a digital food scale? Do you try to stay within your calorie goal everyday? To lose fat you have to be in a deficit. Then think about exercising to keep your muscle mass and look better. That's it. If you're not doing these things--get started.
