Hello and hugs! Counting calories totally works with determination and patience. Don't get discouraged if your weight fluctuates to over 200 for a few days, especially if you start new exercise - it's water weight and will go away. Stick to a reasonable plan and your weight will start trending down. Give it time.13

It’s a big deal to face this. Bravo.
Many people confuse important with urgent. It is very important for your health to lose the extra weight. It cannot be taken off quickly.
I suggest treating every day as a new start, and hang your success on good choices. Did you skip seconds? Did you log all your meals? Keep notes on every good choice.16 -
Start now and set a long term goal.
Stick at it, it works but you have to earn it1 -
Hang in there! You can do this. Try to educate yourself as much as possible. Start with this thread, and this article. They're both awesome!

The first step is the scariest, so congrats! Stick with the program and you will see success. Just take it one meal at a time, good luck!2

Don't be discouraged. It's definitely a challenge. I've been facing the challenge for over a year. Close to 2 years. I can say I've had my share of hesitation. Now I have worked hard and have a short distance to go. I still struggle some days to stay within my caloric boundaries, but I realize it's something I need to do for me. I made a commitment. I am standing by it.
Find something you are willing to commit to. Always remember that promise. Make sure it's important to you. Yes, you may struggle. Yes, you may backslide at times, but remember and rededicate each time.
One of my commitments was my wardrobe. I have given hundreds of items to Goodwill over the last year, vowing never to buy those larger sizes again. I was at one point I had to wear pants with a 60" waist and a 4-5xl shirt. 22" neck. Most of my clothes were in the 54-56" range, with quite a few 52" when I would lose weight in the past. I just got into 38", 17" neck, and XL shirts (with some L's fitting me). My 42" items, 18" neck and 2xl shirts are gone. Once I get into a 36", my 40" will be donated, and I will NEVER EVER buy that size again. I never want to spend the money I've had to spend in the last year and a half on clothes ever again. It's not my only promise, but it's one of many.
Again, it's a daily struggle for me. Right now, I want to have a snack, but I have already worked my calories out for the day. I recently went 2 weeks without losing 1lb even though I've been strict on my diet. It's frustrating. it's hard. I won't give up this time. Don't let discouraging thoughts rule you. Rule the thoughts, and defeat them. It's not the short battle that matters, it's the long. You can't lose everything overnight, because the gain didn't occur overnight. Even if you lose a lb a month, it's still progress. Remember that your weight can fluctuate. Some days you may seem to gain. Others you may seem to lose a lot. Don't be distracted by that. Look at the big picture. Look at the overall trend.
Figure out what encouragement you need. Find the support that best helps you. Get it, and you can succeed.9 -
Eat less than you burn, and trust the process. The weight will come off.
Remember, feeling discouraged is not an excuse to go off the rails. Feeling discouraged is just that, a feeling. It will pass. Do not let that feeling stop you from progressing on your journey.10 -
I started about the same weight as you (195.7) and it's really hard sometimes but you feel good once you start making progress and it gets easier. I started 3 weeks ago and down 8 pounds so far and it feels awesome4

Congrats on getting on that scale, it can be a tough number to face.
Kick boxing is great and should provide a decent calorie burn - but like someone else said, you may have some water gain while your body adapts to the new routine.1 -
You made a start, so well done you. There is a wealth of information in this forum - so read the stickies, and look at the Success stories section too, I've found it hugely inspirational.
You can do this.1 -
For me, the first few weeks were the hardest - hungry because I was controlling my calories and not seeing results. It took a few weeks, but I dropped several pounds- a lot of it was water weight. You will too! 200lb is just your starting point. You have a community here and you'll only see that number go down!1

What is the worst thing that can happen if your weight is above 200 pounds? Because if it is it will be so whether you step on the scale or not.
You don't have much control over what the scale says on any given day. You do have control over what and how much you eat. And how much you exercise. Follow the plan and the scale will follow. Just not always exactly when you think.6 -
You have started on your journey and lifestyle change. Knowing that is what it is, because we cannot view it as just a diet with a start and end date, or we will fall back on the bad habits that caused the weight gain. This is what I remind myself of every day. It is a journey for the rest of my life, and I am good with this. You have taken the first step and there will be some hills, and valleys but you will have lots of support, and lots of good posts to read. Good Luck.2

@myluvzs6629 - 200 is just a number, and you don't EVER need to define yourself by a number. Being discouraged is natural as we are all in the "right now" generation. Please don't give up as the health benefits of what your doing "outweigh" (pun intended) any number that you may see on a scale. Continue working out and following the calorie count on MFP and you WILL get healthier, and it may include weight loss. Take care, and GOOD LUCK!!!2

Good for you for facing the scale! I started working to lose weight and get healthy back in January. For me, making progress has taken a lot of patience and hard work. What worked well for me was focusing on building new habits. I would make a big change (like weighing and measuring all my food), and then give it 3 weeks or more to get to where I was really reliable for that and it was no big deal, and then tackle a new thing. (At this point, I am 69 pounds down, with just 56 to go. The work is paying off.)
Be patient and kind with yourself. Building a new you will take work and time and attention and some kind of changes to your habits and attitudes. You'll have to take action even when you don't feel like it and even when you hit a plateau for no apparent reason. There are lots of great people here who will support you.2 -

199.4 (or 200+) is just a number on the scale, just data. It's not a "personal worth as a human being" score.
Gradually make some positive, sustainable changes in how much you eat, and how much you move, and you'll lose weight, and learn a lot about yourself along the way.
Consider reading some posts in the "Success Stories" part of the forum. Many people have succeeded at this; you can, too.
Hugs and best wishes!
