What if there was a famine that reached its tentacles into Western Countries where food abundance was once common and taken for granted.

How do you think it would effect you personally and the people closest to you?

I think MFP would whither and go offline. Weight lifting and cellulite obsession and inappropriate PMs would lose their luster.

People would eat sugar, carbs, gluten, animals, grain, Pixie Stix, Twinkies and smoked pork rinds and they would like it. No more food fear or food demonization.

MFP will never wither. Long after Faceplace and Instachat and Tintin have all faded into the dark recesses of history during this enforced adventure into Ludditism, MFP will stand as a beacon in the darkness. Sharing recipes for human flesh and gardening tips (just the tip).

    Whoa

I think I'd personally maybe not survive it. Solitary types and people without families would have to band up with others, live collectively and travel in search of food within that small band. But there wouldn't be a blood bond of common ancestry, or a spousal sexual bond or necessarily even a friendship bond. It might not be doable.

Since I don't live in decent places, this would have no impact on me

There's lots of farmland and food production where you live? I know it would probably never happen, it's just like a worst case scenario discussion (knock on wood!)

Yeah, most of the farmland has been wasted by people without the knowledge or equipment to farm it properly. Those with the knowledge are being killed daily. But there is land to farm and good soil for a multitude of crops

All of the furry critters that wander into my yard, bunnies, deer, bears, an occasional elk would become prey instead of lawn ornaments.

I think I'd have a big reality check.
Honestly, I think I'd do poorly.

I'm a super picky vegetarian. After all the store rations were gone, assuming I could secure any, I guess I'd be eating grass and hopefully non toxic plants. Eating grass and plants would be a full time job, herbivores in nature basically eat all day long. Plus I'm in Canada, so I guess I'd have to head south for the winter.

I have little to trade, I don't have many possessions, what I did have I suppose I'd have to bring with me for my winter trek.

For real tho, I really can't imagine the levels people may go to in that situation. We are so used to convenience.

Farmers would become the wealthiest. Rich soil farmland would become the most expensive real estate.
...or would they? Is there a problem with the environment that is causing this famine?

Would you steal the candy from elementary school age trick or treater's plastic orange pumpkins and then slam the door in their faces?

Again, I would do whatever to survive. I would try not to be a jerk about it though.

Wouldn't you just start with squirrels and pigeons though and then maybe hop a barge to the South Pole where fish and penguins are plentiful?

    OK, so my thought applies.
There would definitely be a huge shift in what we considered valuable.
I don't have many practical skills, another reason I don't think I'd do well or even survive.

Its possible if my immediate neighbors all banded together we would do ok. We have a whole herd of pet deer we could live off of for some time, and sooooo many squirrels. 2/5 have chickens, 3/5 garden, so as long as we had some seeds to get us started I think we could get some veggies in there too. Fruits would be lacking though, we may have to worry about some scurvy, but I did put in some berry bushes this year, so I'm working on that. I think we would have some serious personality issues, I am pretty sure most of the clan would want to shut in and keep our resources to ourselves, except for one couple, they seem like they would want to help others. But, the wife would definitely be a good asset because she is a good gardener, so it might not be smart to just kick her off the island....

    I would be completely dead.

    Farming?

    Gunplay?

    Survival Skills?

Heck, I don't even know how to use a Phillips head screwdriver.

Hamsters, ferrets, fish, lizards most definitely. Unless lizard meat is hazardous, I don't know the ins and outs of that.
