All,
I bought some raw almonds from Trader Joe's. They are really tasty. I am just wondering if eating them is good for me or bad for me? sometimes I feel guilty when I add them to my diary, and I don't know if they can be detrimental to losing weight. Thoughts?
also, I don't overeat them, i stick with the serving size (1/4 cup) or much less.

GOOD if you have a reasonable serving size!!

    Good!
But they are calorie dense so you do have to pay attention to portion size.
I count them and enter them by number. It's still surprising to me that 4 or 6 almonds can be a nice little snack to keep me going!

Excellent source of fat. Satisfying crunch. And filling. It's a win win win.

since you bought raw almonds you're skipping the problem of the salt and roasted almonds, take a handful and enjoy them, log them, they fit into most of our healthy routines
  • Dr. Oz recommends walnuts. You just have to watch your serving size.

I love almonds. They are one of my favorite health foods, however, they are dangerous with out my food scale.

About 30 grams is 160 calories, however, 30 grams of almonds is more filling than you would expect. If you do not have a scale, you can estimate that each almond is 1 gram.

I eat one-two servings every day. Have I mentioned that I love them?
  • almonds are very good for you as is peanuts ... and I must say I have a trick if I don't want to eat alot .... I eat a handful of them about 30 min - 1hr before I eat and it is filling ... keeps me from eating too much .... and yes, they are very good for you ... just don't eat the whole container .... LOL
  • Everyone is right - they are great, in moderation! Try the unsalted roasted ones - they have 1g more fiber & I like the taste better. If you have an Aldi's near you - they are the cheapest place w/best quality to get them! ENJOY!

They have "good" natural fat in them also (unlike animal fat). It is surprising how full they can make you feel with just a few. I believe they work out to about 8 calories each so that should be helpful.

Almonds = Happiness...yummm. I buy them and split them up into ziplock bags so I only eat a serving at a time...but ya, if I have extra calories almost always a go to food...yummy crunch, flavor, filling and good fat. I say keep em!

Almonds are great! They are a good source of Riboflavin, Magnesium and Manganese, and an excellent source of Vitamin E. Just watch your serving size. For me, a handful is one serving (about 1/4 cup, or 24-28 almonds).

Love almonds. I make a spicy mixed nut thing from Ellie Kriger. Loads of nuts, seeds, curry powder, rosemary, maple sryup, sea salt. Roast in oven. Yummo. Just have to watch the portion size but a great snack.

That's what I do too... my desk drawer is full of ziplocs full of 1/4 cup portions.

I love almonds, they do taste effin great, and they provide a lot of essential nutrients, but honestly, they have got to be the most overhyped, "health" food out there. Personally, I prefer to snack on foods that are NOT more calorically dense than chocolates and have a better Omega fats ratio...

Omega 6/3 ratio of various nuts:
    English Walnuts 4:1
    Macadamia is 6:1
    Black Walnuts are 16:1
    Pecans are 20:1
    Pistachio is 37:1
    Hazelnut is 88:1
    Cashew is 117:1
    Pumpkin Seeds 117:1
    Sunflower Seeds 300:1
    Pine Nuts are 300:1
    Brazil Nut is 1000:1
    Almonds 1800:1
    CA Avocados 15:1
  • i don't eat whole almonds because my system finds nuts hard to digest. So right now I drink almond milk. (no added sugar.) Any other ideas?

Almonds are one of the best foods you can eat. They are high in protein and other nutrients and fiber. They really take the edge off my hunger for a mid-afteroon snack along with a small piece of fruit. 1 oz is about 20 almonds or about 180 calories. Check the MFP on this but this is about right. So you have to actually COUNT out the number you eat and eat the appropriate amount and put the jar away. Otherwise if you eat too many the calorie count gets very high. But yes, eat almonds and other nuts but watch portion control. And wait 20minutes after you are done eating your small handful of nuts and you will notice they kill hunger pains.

All nuts and seeds are good for you~ But I can't buy them, once I have a pack in my hands I eat all of it, I have no will when it comes to nuts or ice cream ;D

I'll take a natural food that IS nutritionally dense naturally over a concoction of ingredients and artificial flavourings any day

I add about a tablespoon of sliced almonds to my spinach and goat cheese salads with my mandarin oranges just about everyday. I also love to grab a quick half a handful of them just before or after my workouts of almonds or sunflower seeds! YUM!
  • I love almonds, but have to be careful because of my jaw issues (TMJ). Currently snacking on pistachios. Been adding sunflower seeds to my salads lately. It's a nice way for some crunch without the empty calories of croutons. I love cashews and walnuts, and like most other ones, except pecans. Don't care for those.

Good. I am a quarter-owner of my family's almond ranch in Northern CA, and I thank you all for your patronage. Seriously, it's a great food, nutritionally dense and delicious. Eat up, as long as you keep your portion sizes small and it fits into your daily calories.

Almonds and walnuts - good in moderation - I always have a little container in my handbag for when I get hungry and I need to eat something.....

Just understand the portion sizes - for almonds I work on 10 being a portion....and yes make sure it is the raw ones - not salted or roasted.....

Almond milk is also pretty good
