would love your experiences with this thinking about asking to be put on it at my next endo appt its said to help with the excess hair and acne. Did you experience this? i think its said to take a year to see more permant results how soon did you experience anything? mixed reviews about whether you can drink while on it what did your endo tell you?

I drank while I took it (I would still be on it if not for a lack of insurance) though I've never really been a big drinker. I was only warned that my potassium levels needed to be monitored and to not consume too much potassium since it's potassium sparing. My facial hair is extremely coarse and relatively thick, but the spironolactone seemed to help thin it out a bit/reduce it. It made the hair on my lower tummy (and the few hairs that grow around my nipples) disappear completely. Overall, the abnormal hair growth that I have over my entire body was significantly reduced. I started noticing results after about a month on it, with the full effect by about 4-6 months. I was on the highest dosage. I'm not sure how well it works with acne since I've been fortunate in that regard, but I have heard good things about that.

I have been on it for about 5 yrs. Never really had a problem with acne and I still don't. Excess hair did thin out but not to the point where it is gone. That might be due to me being almost fully Italian lol. It did take about 6-12 months for good results. Alot of non endo doctors get confused on why you are on it since it is a diuretic. I have and do drink while taking it and haven't had any bad experiences due to it. All side effects depend on your personal body though. I hope this info helps you. Good luck!

I was on it for acne in the past and it had litle effect. My particular case didn't respond to anything until I went on Accutane, which they no longer make...

I could not tolerate it. I had a dizzy type reaction on it and had some trouble driving. Like if I was looking in one direction, and then turned my head, it was like my vision was moving slow motion....okay, so I can't explain it well, but it was weird. Plus we knew we were going to try to get pregnant within a couple of months and it causes fetal death if you accidentally get pregnant. But I do wish I could have tolerated it. I still struggle with the acne.

I was and still am on it. It hasn't changed my hair distribution much, but the hair loss I was seeing improved after they increased the dosage. My acne improved, it's not gone, but improved. Been on it for about 5 yrs.

It didn't so much reduce the amount of hair, but maybe slowed the growth for me (so I wasn't getting a 5 o'clock shadow anymore! lol). But for some reason it actually helped my dandruff!

As someone else mentioned, it is a potassium sparing, but I never really had problems with that....however, it *is* a magnesium-depleting (since it is a diuretic, it flushes out the Mg with the water). After experiencing shoulder/upper back cramps, and not knowing what it was from, a friend of mine suggested Mg supplements - and voila! Cured.

@leilahh: for me spiro was on the $4 list for the 25mg tabs, so I had my dr prescribe me 4x25mg/day instead of 50s or 100mg tabs. It was cheaper for me that way.
