Why are people afraid of clowns?

    Are you? Why?

I loved clowns as a kid. My favorite picture book was different kinds of clowns. I wanted to be a clown when I grew up.
I don't remember people being so afraid of clowns back in the '70's-'80's.
I would guess people find clowns menacing because they associate them with being vulnerable. I suppose a clown acts different to normal people and their real self and motives are hidden so maybe they feel suspicious.

A horror movie character dressed as a clown killing people is not what I think of when I think of clowns. If they were dressed as cashiers, doctors, pizza chefs, etc they would be as scary to me.

Clowns freak me the hell out. Why? John Wayne Gacy, need I say more? Porcelain dolls also give me the creeps.
