I loved clowns as a kid. My favorite picture book was different kinds of clowns. I wanted to be a clown when I grew up.
I don't remember people being so afraid of clowns back in the '70's-'80's.
I would guess people find clowns menacing because they associate them with being vulnerable. I suppose a clown acts different to normal people and their real self and motives are hidden so maybe they feel suspicious.
A horror movie character dressed as a clown killing people is not what I think of when I think of clowns. If they were dressed as cashiers, doctors, pizza chefs, etc they would be as scary to me.0 -
Clowns freak me the hell out. Why? John Wayne Gacy, need I say more? Porcelain dolls also give me the creeps.1
