So I stopped using CoffeeMate creamer in my coffee a few months ago because 1) i ran out and 2) i felt like it was a waste of calories. So I found Torani Sugar Free Vanilla syrup and LOVED IT! Zero calories, zero fat, zero everything! Today I was telling my friend how I no longer want to order my Dunkin Donuts coffee with splenda because 1) its too damn sweet and 2) its an extra 25 calories per 2 packets. She then proceeded to tell me that most sugar free items have artificial sweeteners in them and sure enough Torani is made with Splenda! So my question is how can I continue to enjoy my coffee without the added artificial sweeteners and extra calories? I don't drink black coffee, I add a little bit of skim milk. Any suggestions would be appreciated!!!! :drinker: <~~ coffee, not beer haha

You want it to be sweet but with no calories? That's what artificial sweeteners are for...

You don't want artificial sweeteners? Then either go without anything sweet, or measure your sugar carefully.

Splenda isn't as bad as most artificial sweeteners as it is made from sugar that has been modified so that it tastes very much sweeter so you only need a tiny fraction compared with sugar. It is then made bulkier so you can spoon it just like sugar. That's why it only has a fraction of the calories and why a spoonful weighs so much less than sugar. I would definitely chose Splenda over other sweeteners. Obviously if you can do without it that's great, but if you need something sweet that's sugar free then Splenda is probably your best option. I'm sure there are people who know more than me about it :-)

There are some natural sweeteners out there. Some made with Stevia and Xylitol. I prefer the Xylitol as I think it tastes more like sugar and has no bad aftertaste.:drinker:

Agave nectar. It is a natural sweetener (from a plant) and it is also great for diabetics as it doesn't spike your sugar. I think it's 60 calories for a tablespoon but it is organic, from the agave plant. It has the consistency and look of honey, but my husband has it in his coffee everyday and swears by it. You can use it as a syrup on "healthy" pancakes and I also use it in my granola recipe.

You can try liquid stevia. I found it at my local health food store in regular, cinnamon, vanilla and english toffee.

Honey is another option. It does have calories but the body copes with it so much better than processed refined sugar so you don't get blood sugar spikes. Honey is also very good for you. The other suggestions look interesting too, I may have to try them myself :-)

You can use Stevia. Stevia is an all natural sweetener derived from a plant. It is not artificial. A VERY small amount goes a long way! So, add a tiny bit and taste it and keep doing that until you learn how much is good for you. Too much will leave an aftertaste.

If you want flavor without the sugar, you can use the same trick with vanilla beans that you can also use for baking sugar - after you use a vanilla bean (order these online instead of in stores - you can literally save more than 75% of the cost if you go through an online vendor - I use Beanilla and have been really, really happy with them), rinse and let it dry, then store it in your coffee beans/grounds. They will take on the vanilla flavor and it's also a great way to keep using an expensive vanilla bean. I also put the leftover beans in my sugar container and in some of my sea salt for when I bake with it.

I keep really good almond extract around (like the Penzey's or Silver Cloud Estates varieties, not the imitation stuff) and occasionally use a few drops in my coffee. This is especially good in iced coffee. Then I get the flavor without the sugar.

You could also try some flavored coffee beans/grounds to brew at home/office. House of Coffee Beans (based in Houston) does some amazing flavors and sells online. http://houseofcoffeebeans.com

I use stevia and a coconut milk creamer... (unflavored) no added sugar and only 10 calories a serving
the flavored ones are LOADED with sugar---- it is in the organic cooler section in my grocery store.

I actually grow my own stevia plant and then just dry out the leaves and crush it up :) no added nothing and not processed at all !!

I do not think that 25 calories or less in a sweetener is a big deal, if you enjoy the coffee with the current sweetener continue to using it and cut things with more calories. I love dulce de leche (the real, from my country, Argentina) and I never stop eating dulce de leche, every night I reserve 60 calories to eat a tablespoon of dulce de leche, and I already lost 42 pounds since september 9, 2010... so not worries for 25 calories... if you do not pass your daily target.
