Anyone losing weight with no excercise?

Hi everyone. Was just curious if there’s anyone out there who’s lost weight / is losing weight by eating healthier and sticking to a calorie deficit without excercising?

Yes. I and many many others here lost significant amounts of weight by doing nothing but remaining in a calorie deficit.
Working out contributes only a fractional amount towards weight loss and in my case when I did start exercising contributed exactly zero towards my weight loss progress as the small amount of calories I burned while working out were more than offset by being hungrier and needing to eat a little more.
Lose weight in the kitchen. Get fit in the gym.20 -
Yes, I lost the majority of weight this year without being sedentary and unable to exercise due to a temporary disability. I still don't do any real cardio just some weights, physical therapy and some walking yet I continue to lose weight. Two years ago I did tons of cardio (trained for a marathon) and actually gained a couple of pounds (from eating too much food on a mostly healthy diet). Diet is what matters the most while trying to lose weight.7

Yep, lots of people eat in a caloric deficit and lose weight with no exercise. In fact, too much exercise can be a detriment to weight loss if cortisol levels stay high. Granted exercise has a plethora of other benefits, but it's not necessary for losing weight, at all.5

I only started my journey in September, but I've lost 9 pounds in 8 weeks without exercise. I have to do it that way because exercise doesn't come naturally to me and I know I won't stick with it. So if I lose by exercise then it will come right back on when I stop exercising...and I will stop. So calories only for me! So far so good.2

You don't need to exercise to lose weight, you just need to eat a caloric deficit. That being said, exercise is extremely important, and in my opinion you can't be truly healthy without a moderate level of fitness.11

I got from 150-110lb with no exercise at all but at the end I still looked soft and flabby. Diet for weight loss, exercise for body composition.21

I have had some health issues and am morbidly obese. It's difficult for me to exercise but it's also critical for at least walking about a half hour a day or so. I lost 30 lbs in less then a month due to LPR, Gerd and a narrowed esophagus and was scared. Had some things done in the hospital and procedures so I am at least able to eat in a healthy way but still struggle in walking for breathing, etc. Drs say it's fine to go on like this and you can lose weight. However, I highly recommend to just get out there and take a walk at least. As stated, moderation is always key in everything; even exercise.

Yep. Still losing and haven't exercised more than 2 or 3 times. I do want to start once I'm down a bit more though. Help tone up at least my legs and arms.3

“You can’t out exercise a bad diet”.
I get plenty of movement in my day to day life, I don’t go to the gym (and hit my goal weight 10 pounds ago).
I do plan on doing some weights this winter, but that’s with the goal of body shaping NOT weight loss.1 -
I have a good friend who trains and competes in full ironman competitions. He's 20 pounds overweight. He knows it - it's fat, not muscle. He keeps "intending" to lose it - all while riding 6 hours at a time or making 15 mile long runs. So - no - you can't our run a bad diet.
Weight loss requires a calorie deficit. You can accomplish that without exercise.7 -
Lost a large portion without exercise. It wasn’t until a lot of weight was gone that I was even comfortable exercising. Exercise is good for overall health and can give you wiggle room with additional calories you can eat but not necessary for weight loss.4

I lost my first 10-15 Lbs without doing any exercise. I started walking a lot after that and then subsequently became a lot more interested in really getting my fitness back. I think it's ultimately pretty important to your overall health and well-being to incorporate regular, moderate exercise, particularly if you're otherwise sedentary. Diet and losing weight alone did not correct some of my health issues...regular exercise went a long way in fixing some broken stuff.6

I haven't done any gym exercise but I walk 30mins a day if that even counts? Lost 44 lbs in a year doing it with calorie deficit alone.4

I'm a self-admitted slug, although not completely sedentary. I've lost 8 pounds this past month or so by cutting back calories only. I'm making much better food choices overall too. My only "exercise" is the walking around NYC I do to get to and from my job - which is a bit of a walk from subway stops. Same from home to my rail station and short walks to get lunch, banking, whatever. Adds up to about 30-45 minutes of walking a day. Maybe a bit more on weekends if out and about running errands. I had been wearing a Fitbit for several months and my average was about 8000 steps a day which was quite a bit more than I thought it would be.
I've never been into exerting myself much and now I have some mobility issues (mostly osteoarthritis in my knees) so even less so. Walking is the only thing I can manage but not even that for long lengths of time but I do what I can. It's really the calorie deficit which is having the impact on my weight overall.0 -

I do exercise, but as you can see from all the answers you got, and as research shows, exercise by itself contributes very little to weight loss, and it is not hard to understand why. An intensive hour at the gym will take about 500 calories - about the amount in a piece of cake.
Mild exercise is important to your health in other aspects though, and may also help you to keep a healthy diet because it will help you set your mind on a healthy lifestyle. But as a mere mean to help you increase your calorie deficit, it is not that effective.5 -
I just started mfp last week, and as much as I would like to add exercise, I feel like it's too overwhelming. It takes so much mental energy to stay within my caloric limits. So far, it seems to be working though - lost a pound.8

Yup, me. Haven't done a minute of exercise this year and have lost 10kg. I also dont 'eat healthy' I just eat less. I might start exercising soon though to tone up1

Yes and no.
I've lost weight by doing no more exercise than I used to before I lost weight. My weight loss has come from reducing the amount that I eat.1 -
I have to lose weight for my diabetise but doing it cut back on calories only. I have a bum foot right now. So walking more than needed is out of the question. I lost 5.2 lbs this week. Probably water weight as it is my first week of getting serious.

Yep!! I felt it was the right place to start to create new normal of eating. Being more self aware. I want these changes to be for a lifetime. For me I know exercise has come and gone in my life depending on life’s circumstances. I also haven’t given up my favorites like ice cream, pizza, etc.1

I am not exercising, but I have done things like parking in the further garage at work (give me about 700 steps in to my station instead of 200, so an extra thousand per day. I also usually get stuck at the desk on the high counter at work, so I stand (completely apart from the moving and walking I do) for about 6 to 9 hrs of my 12.5 hr shift. If I get my lunch break, I will walk to the cafeteria to eat (takes 3-4 minutes each), vs eating in the break room that's only about 30 steps from my station. If we're slow, I'll walk a couple small laps every 30 or 40 minutes to keep the blood flowing. If it's not raining I park further from the door at stores, etc.
I spent the last two days prepping and painting (1 coat primer, 2 of paint) a 12*14 room with 9' ceilings. This included emptying, moving and refilling a 65 gallon aquarium. Soon the room will have to be out back together, which means more furniture moving and repeating the aquarium. Turns out my garmin doesn't count climbing up and down the ladder 100 times to do tape and trim work as steps, lol.2 -
You can absolutely lose weight without exercise. As long as you're in a calorie deficit, you will drop weight6

It's possible to eat less and lose weight without exercising. However I like to burn some cals and eat more.....or lose weight faster1

I lost 4 stone a few years back on cleaner eating and calorie counting. I felt good because I was physically smaller. This time round I’m combing exercise with the calorie deficit and the feeling exercise has given me isnfar more rewarding, I feel stronger, more energetic and I’d say I feel like I’ve lost more than the previous time but I haven’t, I may have changed shape in a better way?1

Hi, I’ve lost 10.5 kilos (23pounds) in the last 8 or so weeks doing very minimal exercise. I eat 1200 calories. Just a question... for those that start out on a 1200 calorie plan, do u consistently lose weight until u hit goal on 1200? I’ve heard your meant to lower calorie intake as u get smaller but not to go under 1200.

I have not been exercising now for at least a month due to an injury and still loosing weight. I have lost 10kg to date. It a matter of having smaller portions and keeping within the caloric limits mine is 1200 a day. I try and eat as healthy as possible and look for alternatives away from all the sweet things and it seems to be working for me.1
