    Exercises: http://foothealth.about.com/b/2008/05/14/9-exercises-to-help-prevent-shin-splints.htm

    Also, if it's from running, it could be one of two things:

    1. The wrong shoes, or shoes that are beyond their life expectancy;
    2. You're going too fast too soon.

    Best of luck!

    There is another thread about shin splints on MFP as well, about a week old- i have no idea how to link though, but if you search it you might find it as well as some helpful info.

    I kept getting these when I first picked up running....got new shoes & they were ok then I did boot camp & got them again...FINALLY got fitted for the right shoe (and added my orthodics I already had...I'm a RN & bought them several yrs ago b/c of back issues) & I'm finally having less pain.....barely noticable....I will apply cold if they are really hurting & take ibuprofen as needed but since the new shoes they are much better.....
    When they tested me I over-pronate which is what a lot of ppl do so they helped me pick the right shoe
  • First post has good info in it. If you already have them, then do heat and ice. Heat for 20 minutes, ice for 10, and repeat. Do that for a cycle of about an hour and it should help immensely.
  • Did you have a sudden increase in distance? Should try to add no more than 10% to your weekly mileage.

    This exactly. I have suffered from them time and time again because I never let myself properly heal before going at it again.....Mine were coming from the wrong shoes and trying to add to much distance to fast ....best of luck hun...and ice with stretching helps to

    Walking backwards can help alleviate some of it as well. It sounds crazy I know, but I ve been doing it since I was in high school and track.

    Get fitted at a real running store. Also, I just posted a thread about Shin splints. Check my signature below.

    R.I.C.E. and then get fitted for a good pair of Asics or Brooks running shoes.
