CDC: Don’t eat romaine lettuce. If you have any, throw it away.

FYI.

The reason for the dire warning is an outbreak of a strain of E. coli linked to romaine lettuce. Thirty-two people in 11 states have been sickened by the Shiga toxin-producing E. coli O157:H7 strain, and 13 of them were hospitalized. Additionally, 18 people have been infected in Canada.

It’s a significant warning from the CDC to call out all romaine. Usually, the agency tries to issue warnings on specific brands or manufactures of food. This time, they still haven’t found the common grower, supplier, distributor, or brand of romaine lettuce that’s making people sick. So to try to prevent the outbreak from spreading, they’re taking the extreme measure of warning consumers against all of it.

Been discussed. I first saw the news Tuesday early afternoon (immediately after eating a salad that included romaine for lunch). ;-)

I threw mine out. Too bad. I was really looking forward to eating my usual Caesar salad for lunch all week :-(

For those living near stores that have a large Jewish clientele, while it's pricy, bagged "Bodek" romaine is safe.

This is all pretty stupid. 40 million people ate Romaine last week and 43 got sick. Odds, one in one million, more or less. About the same odds as being strangled or electrocuted. And, those are deaths.

My local chain grocery store that tracks purchases for a reward system sent me an email last week because I had recently purchased romaine at their store. In the email, they noted that they were contacting me "In an over-abudence of caution." And you know what? I appreciated it! For a few bucks, I'd rather throw out the damn lettuce than play russian roulette with the health of my family - whatever the odds.

I threw mine out and was so disappointed. I was going to make a cute little turkey boat "taco" with it. But into the trash it went.

That's one way of looking at it. But my entire family tends to eat the same thing and I have 4 younger siblings. I would rather toss the entire bag of lettuce than watch any of them suffer, no matter how small the chance of it happening is. I am 100% sure my parents will agree with me.

If you're just preparing something for you then I could see why you wouldn't think it was a big deal. I think most people are more concerned with the health of the people around them.

Anything other than romaine is excluded from the advisory.

I could give an advisory that driving in the rain would increase your likelihood of a fatal accident and provide you more protection than the CDC's Romaine advisory.

Here: "Its gonna rain tomorrow. Don't drive."

This is very easy to say if you are not the parent of young children or immunocompromised.
