Tacos Anybody??

I'm trying to find a seasoning substitution for ground turkey tacos. While I'm good with tracking calories when I have tacos, the sodium in the El Paso seasoning is a killer! Even the packets with 25% less sodium. What substitutions do you use for taco seasoning? Or what do you do differently to go lighter when having tacos?

Cumin, Paprika, garlic, Adobo and Sazon are my usual go tos for taco seasoning.

There is no reason to cut out salt unless you need to for a medical reason. Or, if you just don't like the salty taste.

We season tacos with pepper, paprika, cumin, garlic and onion. You can add chili powder or cayenne for more of a spice.

Chili powder, cumin, garlic, and a little sage are my go to. I prefer the less salty taste. There are tons of combinations. Something fun to play with.

Thanks! I not trying to cut out salt, just cut down. I have all of the seasonings you all have mentioned at home so I'm gonna try it out!

I went to cooks.com and found a recipe that didn't have salt. It is pretty much the same ingredients everyone listed here but gave amount of each to make a batch. I increased the chili powder and lessened the cumin for taste.

I use the JOC taco recipe, from which this was adapted: https://www.epicurious.com/recipes/member/views/ground-beef-tacos-50176172

    Yum!

    INGREDIENTS
2 tablespoons canola oil (with a nonstick pan, I only need about 4 grams of oil)
    3/4 cup chopped onion
1 pound ground beef or ground turkey
    1 to 3 garlic cloves
    1 tablespoon chili powder
    2 teaspoons ground cumin
    2 teaspoons ground coriander
    1/2 teaspoon salt
    1/2 teaspoon pepper
    1 (8-ounce) can tomato sauce
1 jalapeno, seeded and minced fine (optional)

I second this, tastes pretty good and you can't beat zero sodium.

It's not that hard to make your own as well, as others have suggested.

I don't care about sodium but I just use the individual spices (like salt, pepper, cumin, chili powder etc) you can then control how much salt you add if sodium is an issue for you.

I decrease the salt to 1/2tsp. and omit the red pepper flakes because my kids are whiners! I make a triple batch and keep it on hand in an old spice jar! 😋

I do a spice blend, heavy on chili powder, but I find a big squeeze of tomato paste (I buy tubes, so convenient!) Really makes it taste like the package. It's probably 1.5 Tbsp of the paste.

In fact, a few days ago I was out of tomato paste, used a bit of salsa as a substitute and it definitely was not as good.
