50/50 women (age & goal weight loss)

I hit 50 at the same time I hit 50 pounds to loose. I would enjoy belonging to a women’s group with similar goals to loose 50+ pounds.

How long do you think it will take to get 50 pounds thinner in this phase of life?

I am just starting MFP.

It’s a tough age to lose - I was near goal when I turned 50 and have packed 30 on.. I’m 55 now and it’s not easy. Menopause is a real challenge. Happy to connect with you and anyone else for encouragement.

Hello ladies. I turned 50 this year and at 180 pounds am on a mission to turn things around. I will add you both. Let's help each other for 2019.
  • You can me. I’m 54 post menopausal and have lost 28 lbs in the past 135 days and need to lose about another 20. Several ladies will tell you it’s harder at this time of life to lose weight, but I don’t agree. While it hasn’t been smooth sailing, learning what a proper portion size has been the best thing that I could ever done!

Hi ladies! I’m excited to hear such supporting words!

I’m at at a conference and proud to say that despite flying and being in a hotel - MFP has made it easier.

Wlkerrita, I’m 185 and I’m dumbfounded! I’m turning this around. I’m short, my goal weight is 135. Embarrassing to admit and I take full responsibility.

Great Kathleen! That’s 1.5 pounds s week! I love that MFP says “you’d be ... pounds 5 weeks from now if every day is like today!”

    I weigh in on Sunday.

FWIW, I started a weight loss effort at 59, 5'5", 183 pounds (about 15 years after chemotherapy-induced menopause, and while hypothyroid). I joined MFP when I stalled out in the mid-150s. In total, it took a bit less than a year to lose about 50 pounds, but I think I was lucky in various ways. It seemed like kind of a fun grown-up science fair project. I've been maintaining a healthy weight for around 3 years now, age 63, weight fluctuating in the 130s.

I'm too old for your target audience, but wanted to drop in to say that you can do this. It's pretty simple . . . but not always easy. ;) Don't let anyone - including yourself - tell you "can't" stories. Keep learning, keep chipping away, keep going even if stuff happens. There's no wagon, so you can't fall off it. And the results are really, really worthwhile. :)

There's another group of women you might want to join in the list above you--50+ December 2018. It moves fast, but the women on there range in age from 50-80+. They have lots of advice, inspiration, and enthusiasm. Some have made their goal, and some are still struggling. Every month they start a new thread, so it's not as hard to catch up.

I'm over fifty, but I need to lose 70. I've already lost 63 since August. MFP has been a fantastic tool. I can't cheat in ignorance when it tells me how many calories I've got left. I'm 5'2" and weigh 201 today. Being under 200 is my goal for the new year--and that's going through Christmas. I know I can do it.

I can relate! I had 50 lbs to lose when I turned 50. But I wasn't able to pull myself together until I was 52. It took 7 months to reach goal. I've kept it off for 4 years now. I've never been able to do that before in my life!

I guess I finally grew up and accepted the fact that I really can't eat everything I want, as much as I want, and keep my weight off. Healthy is definitely WORTH IT! Best wishes and congratulations for being HERE -- The first step in the right direction!

Kelly, that’s great! I tracked everything this week and lost 4 pounds! I don’t expect that will stick - but MFP is helping me go back to making healthy choices.

@Ann - I’m sorry for your chemo. 20 pds of my weight gain is due to sadness loosing my cousin to breast cancer. But I have determined that being fat isn’t helping my sadness go away. I’m doing this for my kids because they “lost me” for a few years and I have to face the consequences of my actions. It’s the least I can do because I am here and must march on.
