So just think about losing 10. 10 lbs would be awesome, right? Then think about 10 more when you get there. Good luck!5

Yep. Just start.
You've faced it. That's where we all started.
Log food. Study your FOOD diary and learn from it. Make small changes where you can, in no time you'll be losing.6 -
You're right, it does. And it is quite a bit away, and it's going to take some time.
But you know what's closer? 2 lbs. Or 5 lbs. Or 10 lbs.
You could lose 2 lbs or 5 lbs by January 31st. Maybe even 10 lbs, since you say you have 100lbs to lose, and you'll likely see an initial drop in water weight.
So rather than focusing on the formidable triple digit number, why not just go for 5 lbs? Make that your goal. Get to 5. You'll probably blow that goal out of the water, but focus on 5. It's a nice number, because once you hit 3 lbs lost, you're already lost more than you have left to lose to get to 5.4 -
I have the same goal and like everyone has mentioned just think about the smaller numbers. That long term goal can be so overwhelming. Best of luck to you!3

Don't look at figures. First step try getting active second step cut down on junk food. Later fix your diet etc. Ease into it. Doing too much too fast will burn you out.1

You've already done one of the hardest steps.. you've acknowledged it. Think short goals 5-10 lbs at a time.3

Short goals are a great idea as above poster said. Think of it this way...If you lose 1 pound a week(which is extremely doable), by this time next year, you will be on the tail end of your journey.....Yep!!! You can do it. I have seen so many on here do it in less time than that too. Best of luck and start slow. Please don't scare yourself out of this.4

Good news- calorie counting works.
Calculate a modest calorie deficit, start a food diary and try to hit your number. You will soon find that you have a better chance to hit your number if you have a plan. Plan for each day and week. Try to anticipate problems and plan around them.
Keep your diary no matter what, good, bad or ugly. Give yourself plenty of time for the calorie counting learning curve. It does get easier.
If your plan doesn’t go so well at any point, try making it better going forward. Just make sure you keep your diary going through lapses and mistakes. The process is more important than the numbers.
Focus on things you can control like planning, logging and problem solving. The only way to fail is quit. Work the process and the scale will take care of itself.
I can tell you for a fact that 100lbs is doable. Only thing needed is persistence.5 -
I have five pound dance parties to keep me on track.4

You’ll feel better and better about a lot of things as you’re losing. What I mean by that is, it isn’t the weight you are now and how you feel about that, then 100 pounds from now. As you lose 5 pounds over and over you’ll get what the poster above said- 5 pound parties.
And if it takes you a year, or two, or three (there are usually stumbling blocks in there and ups and downs) the time will still have gone by. It’s so much better to be on a weight loss journey over that time versus staying the same, or even gaining. We’re all on here for the same reason. You CAN do this (be sure to take before pics and post on the Success boards when you get there!).3 -
You don't need to lose the whole 100 lbs to start feeling good about yourself and for people to notice. I've lost around 70lb, with about another 30 to go. The alternative is to keep on the path that got you to this point and to then find this time next year that you have perhaps 120 lbs to lose. From my experience, there is no staying the same.2
