The Online Fitness Community Doesn’t Promote Fitness

Fitness now means looking good. Instagram, more than any other media, is part of this issue, when stuff like IIFYM is promoted, no form of cardio or conditioning is, and amazing bodies are held by the ones promoting it, the vast majority of the population will adopt a false perspective of what being healthy is. Not only physically, but body image disorders can happen as well. All this insta people also look for the best angles for every pic creating a more unrealistic body image. The truth is simple, if you eat well, lift, and do some form of conditioning, you will be healthy and you will also look great. Don’t fall into the social media game, you are better than you think you are.

I think I'm pretty amazing, TYVM8

Fitness means the same to me as it did before the internet was invented.
You are making a false assumption about how people (in all their diverse ways including those doing massive amounts of cardio) use IIFYM.
My cat thinks I'm wonderful and that's good enough for me.19 -
The "online fitness community" is like any other online interest-group community: There's a pop-nonsense side, and a serious-grownup side (and lots of things in between). You're talking about the pop-nonsense side.
There's excellent, useful information out there . . . one just needs the reseach and critical-reading skills to find it.
We may be better than we think we are . . . or we may be dreaming.
Sincerely: The motivational words - to care about health and actual fitness above looking plastic-pop-fitness hot - are appreciated.15 -
Says the young man taking a selfie, in front of a mirror, with his top off flexing his abs.
I think people are becoming more aware of how pictures can be posed/lit/shopped to enhance how people look. I hope this continues to be highlighted so young people understand that there are all kinds of fit and healthy.20 -

I'm thinking your heart is in the right place, but you're mistaken about online communities. The one here is great - my friends here have accompanied me from morbid obesity to healthy weight, given me a place to brag about PRs in weight lifting and racing, helped me find new ways to challenge myself, and supported me when I was injured and unable to run or lift heavy, so I needed to cut back on my calories and find new, healthy mental habits to carry me through a challenging time.
Incidentally, not everyone is able to lift or do cardio - we have at least one poster here who is quadriplegic, and many who deal with serious physical issues. On the other hand there are posters here who run ultra marathons and win powerlifting contests. But all of us have one thing in common - we are human beings in human bodies, who have to manage those bodies so that they will function as well as they are able to. It can be difficult and confusing, but it's a little easier knowing we're all in it together!14 -
For Insta, it all depends on who you follow. There is some solid info out there and some stuff that’s so bad it makes me laugh. Just like the posts on this site, you have to sift and do a little research to drop the bad and keep the good.2

You realize you posted your rant in an on-line fitness community, right?
