Stones and pounds confusion!!! HELP!

I am SO confused.
Ok, so I am from the UK and so I weigh and think in stones.
When I try and convert my weight into pounds to input my weight on to MFP it all gets a little confusing!

There is 14 lb in a stone... that much I know.
At the moment I am 10 stone and 9 pounds.
So... if 10x14=140 that means 10st=140lb. So that means that 10st and 9lb should be 149 lb right?

Then how come when I use stones to pounds conversion calculators to tells me that 10st 9lb coverts to 152lb? BUT when I put 10st in to the converter it comes up as 140lb... so it is multiplied by 14.

I don't understand!!!!

Have I been calculating my weight wrong this whole time? I am sooo confused!!!!

Could someone explain it to me please? x

    It could mean one stone doesn't exactly equal 14 pounds. So you did your calculations right the calculator is probably just more accurate.

    Are you doing 10.9 stone cos that would work out as 152? Instead of 10st plus 9lbs if you get my drift?

    10.9 x 14 = 152.6
    10 x14 =140 plus 9 = 149 this is the right way

    Your calculating it right, 10st 9lbs = 149lbs. Im from the UK too so the lbs thing throws me off sometimes. You must have put in 10.9 which when x14 = 152 :happy:

    You should think in stone and pounds...

    Like if your 9 stone, 13 pounds...
    1 Stone = 14 Pounds.
    So 9*14= 126 +13 = 139 pounds.
    So you would weigh 139 pounds..

    1 stone equals EXACTLY 14 pounds. 10 stone 9lbs =149lbs. Where's the confusion?

    10st 9lbs is equal to 149lbs.

    Keep it simple only convert whole stones into pound using converters cause i had this same problem(see below)

    I.e. some one who ways 12st 7lb you would do the following 12 x 14lb = 168lb

    then add the remaining 7 pounds to the total of the first conversion - 168lb + 7lb = 175lb

    A few people have said it already. It's clearly reading it as 10.9 stone instead of 10 stone 9.

    10.9 stone = 152.6lbs

    10 stone 9 lbs = 149 lbs

    So whatever calculator you're using, enter it as 10.7 (that will convert it it to 149.8)

    I have to agree with the others - 10.9 stone = 152. So it depends on the calculator and how you are entering your weight and whether or not you actually weigh 10 stones, 9 pounds OR 10.9 stones. :-)

    Some sound advice here, so I'll try not repeat any.

    1 stone is 14lbs so it's not a decimal amount i.e. you cannot entre 10.9 for 10st 9lbs.

    To work out the decimal for X stone Y lbs, divide Y by 14, so in your case, 10st 9lbs = 10.64 st.

    I use metric measuments because I'm more used to them than imperial. What's more, my WW body analyser scales gives me increments of 100g (=3 1/2oz). Psychologically, it's great to see even 0.3kg drop than nothing at all :happy:

    Another reason I stick to metric is that all nutritional info in UK is given per 100g and so for me it's so much easier to see how everything equates.

    Ummmm....a stone is a stone - it's a unit of measurement, and is always exactly 14lbs. The same as a yard is always 36". Or a metre is 100cm. :bigsmile:

    @ Hannah-Dawn - can you set your scales to weigh in pounds? On mine I can set them to pounds, stones and kilos - I have them set to pounds, it makes life easier!

    If you need a simple calculator, try Google. Simply type in what you're converting, the word "in" and what you're converting it to, e.g. "10 stone 7 lbs in pounds" and it gives you 149 lbs as the top entry using its inbuilt calculator. It works for anything else too, pound to kg, miles to km etc.
