Salt / Sodium

Hi, I'm a big guy 6foot5 , 21 stone , just got a question on salt / sodium
I wanna lose 2lbs a week, mfp says if I want to maintain weight, I should eat 3350 cals a day, but as I want to lose it comes out as 2350 cals a day.
My recommended sodium is coming out as 2300mg a day. Would I lose weight if I ate the 2350 cals a day but ate slightly more sodium on a daily basis, say 3000mg a day?

Sodium doesn't have anything to do with fat loss. Excessive amounts can cause water retention, but that's about it.2

Sodium won’t affect your fat loss, though you might retain a bit more water if you eat a lot of it. 3000 mg may or may not be “a lot” of sodium for you, depending on your body and how you usually eat. Unless you have a medical reason to worry about sodium, I would not pay much attention to it.2

That is a default sodium setting. I am a foot shorter than you and get the same recommendation. Frankly, not everyone needs to worry much about sodium. I actually need lots and in fact supplement with an electrolyte drink most days, otherwise I feel dehydrated.
That is not to say anyone should be gorging on sodium, and certainly there are certain medical conditions that would have you restricting, but going over your sodium won't affect your weightloss. Having a high sodium day may cause you to retain more water, but a fairly consistent sodium intake will result in a fairly consistent water content in your body.1 -
Brill, thanks for all your responses saying near enough the same thing. I'll ignore sodium for a while when logging, but make sure I don't go ridiculously high on a daily basis and see what happens 👍0

nice read i always wondered if sodium affected true fat loss0

If you want, you can swap out sodium for something like fiber on your food page. I did that with sugar, but I still see sodium as I'm concerned I don't get enough some days so I keep a bit of an eye on it.0
