Breastfeeding advice

I'd like to start losing weight after having a baby (3months pp) and I'm breastfeeding. Could anyone advise me on how this would affect calorie counting i.e. am I ok to go by what this app has recommended or do I need to allow myself some more to allow for breastfeeding?

Add breastfeeding to your food diary to get more calories3

if i were you I would contact a nutritionist or a lactation consultant. both may be covered by your health ins,.0

There really isn't a way for the app to determine how many calories you're burning from breastfeeding. You can't use the app as intended for weight loss while breastfeeding because the calorie goal would be too low. There are entries for logging breastfeeding as 500 extra calories to eat per day, but that's an estimate. You could be burning more or less. I recommend setting your account to maintain your current weight, log your food for 4-6 weeks (food scale helps), and let breastfeeding create the deficit. Track your weight and aim to lose no more than one pound per week, and adjust calories as you go along.6

If I were to have another baby (I've had 4 monsters already, and they've driven me mad so it's not likely) I would eat at maintenance and allow the breastfeeding to act as my deficit. That way you are eating enough to maintain your supply. Make sure to stay hydrated as well.4

Are you pumping as well or strictly breastfeeding?? I'm in the same boat with my 6 month old. I started counting calories a couple days ago and am able to monitor my supply because I pump at work. So far there has been no decrease in my supply. I have been eating around 1800 cals/day. From what I read online you should eat 1800-2000/day while breastfeeding. Everyone's body is different though soooo hard to say.1

I was able to lose the weight with just breastfeeding with my first but hung on to 10lbs with my 2nd and 3rd now despit other attempts until I stopped nursing. Enjoy this time with your baby. Don’t focus so much on the calories you eat but the content of your food. Listen to your body and your baby.1
