I'm 5'8 and 181.
I seriously want to get back down to 150 or less. I honestly have no idea where to start. I love to eat which makes it especially hard.

Try a bit of cardio at first. I believe the easiest way to lose fat is by burning it. Try running at least 2-3 miles every day.1

- get a food scale if you don't have one
- set MFP to lose 1lbs/week (change it to 0.5lb/week when you get down to about 20-15lbs left)
- track your calories on MFP and use good entries (compare nutritional info to labels or to the USDA database)
- be patient!
- be honest in your tracking!1 -
Seems you are eating too much carbs in depression.. first of all you have to learn to be happy.. unless u are happy.. u wont be able to control your food... So first gain your confidence.. then start.. all will be well then3

Start with small habit changes. For example I love ice cream. So I started buying “diet” ice cream and found after a while the real stuff was too sweet. If you drink a lot of soda, cut back and start substituting water or tea during a meal. If your portions are too big cut back by a 4th or even an 8th, and when that becomes normal cut back a little bit more. Substitutes sweet potatoes for Idaho potatoes, whole wheat for white bread, etc. I was able to change my eating habits this way. It’s still a struggle but a lot of stuff “became natural” after a while. Now instead of ice cream I’m eating whipped cream with berries. After a while too you’ll notice how yucky you feel when you do “fall off the wagon” and it won’t be hard at all to get back on.2

Do you think you gained 17 lbs of FAT? or just that you gained 17 lbs?
Unless you had a DEXA scan or a high end InBody scan; I'll go out on a limb and guess you gained 17 lbs.
I'm 5' 8". October 1 i was 186.3 lbs...so similar to you. I'm at 158 this morning on my way to 144.5
The good news is at least 7, and likely 10 is water, so if you go low carb you'll get a nice woosh as your system dries out... but that's just a short sighted morale boost.
loosing fat is pretty simple, burn more calories than you consume. "simple" does not mean "easy" because we are human and we get hungry, and if you're like me, you use food for comfort too. So it's just a battle of determination. It is 80% about what goes in your mouth and 20% about what you do for activity.
To give good advice we need to know more about your goals, is it about a number on a scale? is it about your physique? is it about losing fat?0
