In 2017 I lost 12 kgs.
2018 was an important year for me academically. I didn't get time to exercise. But I always stayed in calorie defecit the whole year. I avoided fast food and alcohol the whole year.
Now I wanted to get back into the grind. Not only I gained the 12 kgs back but gained additional 5 kgs.
What is wrong with my metabolism??
Any help will be appreciated.

If you gained about 17kg in 2018 you clearly weren't in a calorie deficit.
More like a surplus of about 350cals/day.
It's not your metabolism - check and recheck your food logging.11 -
Once I started tracking I realized although much of my food was healthy I was eating too much of it. Especially protein. I’m probably eating 1/3 of the calories I did. I’m fairly sedentary except I’ve now added some water jogging. Just avoiding alcohol/ fast food does not mean deficit. Once you start logging again you will probably have an ah ha moment.2

Congrats on your year of success!
Once you start tracking what you eat, you will know what is/isn't working for you so that you can get back on track again with your goals. I know I used to get mad when people would tell me to "track everything" and that I am probably consuming too much, but they were right. Keep us updated on your journey

You weren't in a calorie deficit if you gained weight.
There's nothing wrong with your metabolism unless you have a diagnosed, relevant medical problem.
The issue is almost guaranteed to be that you are eating more and/or burning less than you think you are.
You can ensure a calorie deficit by weighing and logging all your food, staying within your calorie goal, and making sure that your exercise calorie calculations are not exaggerated.0
