Is it bad...

to go over your daily percentage of vitamins? When I look at the nutritional content of what I've eaten in the day, I almost always have had WAY over at least Vitamin A or Vitamin C (anywhere from 100-400%). The fact that it's written in red bugs me...is that something I should try to avoid? And if so... how? I've only had one meal today and the 18 strawberries in my breakfast smoothie already has me at 129% OVER on Vitamin C.

The RDA for vitamins is very minimal. Many vitamins such as Vitamin C are safe to consume in large quantities and many should be higher amounts for optimum nutrition. Do some research and find out what is best for you.0

it's never bad to go over micronutrients, like vitamins a, c, b, etc. protein I don't usually worry about either. fat and carbs are the zones to keep an eye out for0

I know vitamin C is safe to consume in large quantities, but I think A can be toxic if you eat too much of it. What qualifies as "too much," though, I'm not certain. Do some research (Mayo Clinic and Cleveland Clinic websites are good resources) to see if you're in a safe zone.
Also, you don't want to OD on iron, but that's tough to do with just diet.0 -

Please do some research before giving out this kind of advice. Some nutrients are toxic in high doses.0 -
Vitamin C is water soluble so any excess amounts your body does not need is released through your urine.
Vitamin A on the other hand is a different story. Both human and animal studies show that a higher vitamin A intake interferes with bone metabolism. Specifically, excess vitamin A suppresses osteoblast (bone-building) activity, stimulates osteoclast (bone breakdown) formation, and interferes with vitamin D’s role in calcium absorption and regulation.
I don't know how much is too much for vitamin A though, it's something you might want to ask your doctor about.

I've also heard that too much Vitamin A too often isn't good... but nothing wrong with too much Vitamin C.0

Please do some research. Yes you can go over on some vitamins and minerals with some pretty serious effects.0

Too much Vitamin C can cause miscarriage.
Everything in moderation people.0 -

That's a new one for me. I never heard that! Good to know, though.
When I was pregnant, anything acidic triggered my "morning" sickness, so most high-C foods were out, anyway (oranges, tomatoes, etc.).0 -

This is not proven but a web myth:

Well, crap. There goes my record of double-checking stuff like this before believing it. lol
Not that it matters. I'm not having any more babies, anyway. :-)0 -
Hm well in order to do any research, I need to know how much MFP considers 100% of a daily dose... does anybody know where to find that information?
And I'm definitely not trying to get pregnant, so I'm not worried about that side of things
Thanks for the responses, everybody.0 -
MFP uses the government RDAs to determine 100%.0

That link does NOT prove it's a myth. Just two medical students attacking an old Russian study on the subject and discussing the lack of research in the area. Please look up the effects of megadoses of vitamin C on progesterone production by the corpus luteum. The jury is still out, but it's definitely NOT a myth. Also take a look at some of the research in the comments section of the article you linked to.0 -

Ok, maybe myth was the wrong choice of words. It's an unproven theory.0 -
129% of your recommended daily intake probably isn't so bad especially when it comes from real food. I worry about some of the multivitamins on the market, my sister and I looked up how much was in her woman's multi and found some minerals and vitamins were in the 3000 or 2000% levels.. and they still sell this stuff.0
-
I wouldn't worry too much - I've found some of the recommended amounts on MFP are actually a little low. You might want to bring it up at your next physical, just to reassure yourself.0

Vitamin A is the one to watch, really. More than 1.5mg a day on a regular basis is a poor idea, especially if you are not taking enough vit D in, according to the NHS.
I wouldn't lose sleep over it, but if there is one to keep an eye on, it's really that one.0 -
(Vit A in overdose is not good for bone growth)0
