So Im kind of new to this.
Im currently studying at uni, so losing weight is always a struggle with the limited money, the outings, the pubs, the clubs and so on.
would love to have some motivation/tips/advice from other students looking to lose 20-30 pounds (or anyone whos already managed that; success stories are always a good motivation).

I'm in the same boat, wanna be friends? I want to lose about 10kg, which is around 20 pounds I think. I'm trying the low carb approach, how about you?0

Hello and welcome!
I too am a student (at college, will be at uni next year) and I'm currently hoping to lose 16lbs. Not quite 20 - 30 I know, but close enough!
I've been on MFP for 2 weeks and I've lost 4lbs so far and I feel great! I've been drinking a lot of water to keep hydrated and just constantly thinking about my reasoning for wanting to lose weight. I've heard that taking weekly or even daily pictures of your body is a great way to lose weight as you can physically see the changes, but I haven't done this as I simply forgot! It does sound like something that could work though.
Best of luck and welcome! :-)

Hi guys
My approach is trying to eat as healthily as possible and trying to record all my meals and snacks in MFP before i actually eat them to see if it fits in to my cal/fat/carb goal.
im the worlds worst chocaholic which isnt helpful, but i figure as long as its controlled, its ok. especially as im extra carefull about everything else i eat and exercise dairly regularly.
I think my biggest problem is going out, im genuinly scared of it, especially when its with lots of ppl.
Im going to amsterdam on friday with a few friends and im genuinly dreading it in terms of keeping within my goal, especially as i wont have time to do proper exercise0 -
Hi ya, ive lost 17lbs so far and still around 10 to lose, i'll be going back to uni in october if you want to be friends0

tell me about it! ive managed to be fairly good this summer but Im dreading uni especially as I will be spending a lot of time with my boyfriend again who eats EVERYTHING and is still really skinny. I put on a lot of weight when i was with my ex, jsut generally picking up lots of bad habbits so im holding all my fingers crossed that i can hold on to my will power when my bf is scoffing a take away or a huge bag of crisps0 -
so what unis/colleges are people at?0

Final year university student here !! Instead of gaining freshmen 15 pounds...I gained the freshman 50 pounds :P... Lost 30 pounds.... now I've got 20 more pounds to go!! ....this is my last year in college...and I sure do not want to start working when I'm still chubby!!! Lets all motivate each other!! We can do this!!!0

Yea I know how you feel, I tend to let go on a couple of nights out per week and just drink and eat what I want and it doesn't seem to affect my loss too much. As long as I'm good for the rest of the week that is. I think the staying up late and dancing combination uses up alot of energy ! Although I'm not advocating binge drinking of course !0

yeah, i heard people lose weight when they go to uni so in my first year i just ate what i want, waiting for it to magicaly disappear, which of course didnt happen. I managed to lose like half a stone in 2nd semester and then put it all back on during exams (another big issue for me, exam times are horrendous for my weight).
And now have spent the summer working hard.
But clearly, all you guys have managed it so i reckon i can do it too0 -

hahaha... first thing I did to lose weight was quit drinking.
also pre-exam stress eating, post-exam eating, go to a club meeting and get free pizza eating, going out every night beers haha..it all adds up.
during my first couple yrs it was the alcohol that made me gain weight ...and in the last few it was the exams!!!0 -
I dont know if its different for me as I live at home and still travel to uni instead, however I still have lunch there, and usually have to eat alot more as the time i get up (6:45-7am) by the time 10-10:30 im hungry again! there theres lunch etc. But I think it can be alot of stress uni, and sometimes the fact being healthy sometimes makes people question you for example ive had alot of people ask why im eating salad etc instead of mc donalds!
what do you guys study? as I study graphic design so all my course is course work not exams so it feels like there is constant pressure every week!0 -
wahoo student group! I gained about 20lbs in my first year. I joined weight watchers and MFP and i've lost 15 and need to lose ANOTHEr 20 to be in my healthy weight range. the drinking and late night pizza really does ya in!0

I got up to 170 in college. It was mostly from a bad relationship and eating only fast food with no time to work out. I lost it while in college also. I dumped the crappy bf. Then I started having really simple meals. I would have a peanut butter sandwich for breakfast, another sandwich for lunch- either turkey, tuna or grilled cheese or 1 bowl of cereal- cinnamon LIFE, and then I would have chicken and veggies for dinner. I also put a cheap eliptical in my living room, bought it off of ebay for about $130. I did this for about 30-60 min a day while watching tv or listening to music. Then, after I lost some weight I was able to run without my knee hurting from the extra weight. I would start running 3-5 miles a day at a 6 mph pace. That was enough to do it for me. I also only drank water or milk. as you can see, the meals are cost effective, so budgeting wasn't a problem. I also didn't drink hardly.0

Hey,
I am in the same boat as well, kind of. I am a recent graduate of university and I have yet to find a job and to be honest I don't know when I will find one and so money is also a little tight and I am new to this as well. I have also started running, I downloaded an app for 5k run. It is cheap and its only a half hourish three times a week which I think is fair. I am meeting my b/f parents soon and getting engaged soon as well and so I want to drop 30ish pounds before then. I would like to be friends if that is ok with you. Look forward to loosing weight and being fit0 -
I think the main reason students gain weight is
- Too much booze
- Eating crap
I think if you eliminate the above the weight comes off. Although it is a pain in the *kitten* for a student, because bad food is readily 'available' whereas good food you have to get out of your way to get it/ you are eating different from your friends/ more expensive!...
But honestly convenience is not worth looking like doughnut!! It's totally worth it to spend that extra money on better foods, committing a set amount of time per week to fitness, keeping track of what you are drinking...
Wish someone told me earlier!0
