Calorie estimate

So I’ve been usually working out my calories burnt by the steps I do by myself but now I’ve synced my phone to my fitness pal app I’m finding the calorie total is a lot less! Does anyone know which is better to follow!

There's a difference because MFP already includes some step calories, even for sedentary.
In either case, the calorie burn is an estimate. Pick one way and follow that for a couple of months. If you lose weight faster than expected, bump up your calories a bit. If you lose weight more slowly than expected, lower your calorie intake a bit.2 -
the burn rate for fitness is just an estimate. The calories burned are very generic and based on an average person with no health issues and even then isn't highly accurate because people are all different. I personally ignore "calories burned" in any exercise because I know it can be way off.
FYI walking is good exercise but it isn't a real calorie burner. If your intent is weight loss, resistance/weight training is better because more muscle equals more calories burned. Muscle burns calories even while you sleep...why do you think body builders eat in excess of 5000 calories a day?
Just keep exercising as much as you can and reduce your intake of carbs and processed foods. Forget the gimmicks like fitbit etc. Recognize that the more you exercise the more you burn calories...you don't need some gizmo to "track it". People have lost weight and gotten healthier without the use of gadgets and apps for decades...don't get sucked in to the obsession of technology...listen to your body, not your phone app!10 -

OP, if you are attempting to lose weight, it is done with a calorie deficit. You do not have to necessarily reduce carbs. You also do not have to exercise as much as you can.
Walking burns about one-third of your body weight per mile. So not much as far as calories, but good for your health.5
