Issues while on keto

I'm not new to keto, i have been on and off it for years and I have done a ton of reasearch, but my issues i cannot seem to find answers to. I know keto is meant to be a lifestyle not a diet and not something to go on and off of, but when im doing keto i get horrible food aversions. I get extremely sick just thinking about meat ( beef, chicken, pork, etc ) let alone trying to eat them and i love meat. I get nauseous thinking about eating eggs and dairy as well. What i find weird is i love eating all these foods when not 'on keto' so i don't know if its all in my head. After a few days of forcing myself to eat i feel gross with all the fats im eating. My macros are 5/25/70 and I've played around with them with the same results. I feel sick, oily, foggy headed, heavy and gross while on this diet, which is completely opposite to others experience. This lasts for months, so its not keto flu. I want to stay on this way of eating because all the health benefits and i can only seem to lose weight on keto, but it seems my body doesnt like this lifestyle, any advise?

Initially to lose weight. I have friends and family that do keto, they say they are revitalized. They feel great, off medications they have been on for years, reversed fatty liver, cholesterol, depression, they have tons of energy, clear headed and just feel amazing while on it. So, i started to lose weight and to feel better.1

Im not vegetarian by any means thats my point. I have meat at every meal and it's a staple food, but on keto it makes me sick.0

That is how I started to feel after trying a week of low carb as an experiment early in my weight loss effort. The conclusion for me was simple... this is not my natural way of eating. While I may not be great and intuitive portion control I do possess intuition that drives me towards balanced nutrition. I often feel bad after prolonged out-of-character eating for myself and this was true even when I wasn't trying to lose weight. I would crave salads and look forward to occasional meatless days. I would often order off the light menu because I really enjoyed lighter meals.
Now before someone gets in a twist I am not saying you can't achieve nutrition doing Keto but it is unnatural to me and so there is a part of me that rejects it.9 -

Many people see the same results just by losing weight.

Then your issue definitely lies with how accurately you are accounting for calories. It's physically impossible to not lose weight if you're in a consistent calorie deficit.

The weight will fall off of you just fine without Keto. Science tells us that in healthy adults there is no weight loss advantage to a low carb diet. What low carb does is deplete your glycogen which reduces your water weight during the first couple of weeks. This gives people the feeling of quick losses and it sometimes makes them sick because it can also deplete electrolytes if one is not careful.
My doctor loves the expression that weight just falls of me and all I do is eat what is natural and satiating for me. However my weight will very often hover for weeks before I get a new low weight. This is just how the body is designed to work. Your weight will fluctuate up and down primarily because of water retention/release. It sucks and it requires patience but I know if I am in a deficit it will show up and it always does... eventually.6 -

Weight loss is not about *what* you eat, but *how much* of it you eat.
A food scale is the only way to get an accurate view of your calorie intake. Make sure that you either create all of your own diary entries or at least double-check any that you are using from the database against the actual nutrition label. The database here is user-created and, as such, can be wildly (and sometime hilariously) inaccurate.
Another common error is tied to exercise calories 'earned.' Many people underestimate what they eat, and also overestimate how much they are burning through exercise. When these two combine, it usually ends up that these people are not in a calorie deficit and, therefore, aren't losing weight.

I have a different view about keto diet, It came out after the Atkins diet. The Atkins diet is high in fat and keto is high in protein i don't want to get in to studies of why or how they works. Keto is a diet to come of and on. Maybe you are getting to much protein in your diet this could be why you feel sick eating the high protein foods??? Maybe. Is that you in your profile picture ?16

You can achieve these things many times by just losing the extra weight, it's not special to keto (I normalized pre-diabetic glucose numbers just by losing the extra weight).
If you're struggling to stick with keto then it doesn't sounds like it's a good fit for you. No harm in trying it, count it as a learning experience and then move on.
To lose weight the only thing required is to be at the correct calorie deficit for your weight loss goals. You can eat any foods, just in the correct calorie amounts. No need to make drastic changes to your food choices-eat what you enjoy eating, that will go a long way towards making this whole thing sustainable for you, for the long term3 -

This isn't true. Keto is just Atkins induction without the veg and protein requirements. Both are high fat, low carb, moderate protein in intention.
Could be she's eating too much protein, too little fat, but also no need to keto, there aren't health benefits for the average person. I think learning to log calories and then reducing carbs if she wants to is a better approach, and also one that lets her see fat and protein and carb amounts.8 -
Reading through this thread I see allot of mis-information so instead of going through it all I will sudjest you look up Dr. Berg on YouTube. He has an abundance of good information and you can judge it for yourself. By the way his moto is ‘you don’t loose weight to get healthy, you get healthy to loose weight’ and I for one am a big believer in that so if you want to feel better just learn as much as you can about creating healthy habits the rest will follow.

Sometimes meat just tastes bad because of the way it is raised and processed and what is added to it. It may be that you can find a healthier option and you will like the taste better. Especially if you are not eating lots. I live overseas with very skinny but delicious chicken, etc and I find meat in America to be tasteless at times.0

Reading through this thread I see allot of mis-information so instead of going through it all I will sudjest you look up Dr. Berg on YouTube. He has an abundance of good information and you can judge it for yourself. By the way his moto is ‘you don’t loose weight to get healthy, you get healthy to loose weight’ and I for one am a big believer in that so if you want to feel better just learn as much as you can about creating healthy habits the rest will follow.
Huh, I've never heard this before and it doesn't match up with my experience at all-losing the extra weight (around 50lbs) definitely made me healthier. Besides the normalized prediabetic glucose number I also improved all my other blood work/health markers, with the weight loss. Now a few years into maintenance I still have excellent health markers and blood work panels, and in that time I've experimented with all sorts of ways of eating, (from vegetarian to primal, various forms of IF etc). It hasn't mattered how I've eaten/what my macros ratios are at though, my weight controls my health markers (at this point I have around 7 years of data that shows this).
But, if this is what motivates you then it's good that you've found something that works for you5 -

I live overseas as well, in japan. While the meat here is processed better and tastes better, i had the same issue with meat while in the states.2 -

Dr. Berg? You mean the chiropractor reprimanded by the Virginia board of medicine for sharing falsified information and making dangerous medical claims? The guy who has no formal training in nutrition and uses his title of Dr. to purposefully trick people into thinking he's qualified to share the information he does?

It's amazing how people will trust anything that anyone with a Dr. in front of their name says. They automatically think that "because they are a doctor they must be an amazing doctor" and "because they are a doctor they must be experts in every single field of medicine." But have you guys met many doctors? Even the ones who are good in their field are not close to being knowledgeable on every aspect of medicine. Nor should they be. Just being a "doctor" does not mean that they know any more about weight loss than your average MFP poster.7 -

There are no health benefits of Keto that you can't get from losing weight via other means. If Keto makes you feel bad, then it is definitely not for you.6 -

I really like my doctor and he is really thorough most of the time. However, the very first time I saw him he suggested a way of eating that would have caused me to fail. Luckily I had already been losing weight for several months and I knew better. He wasn't the first medical person to give me bad weight loss advice and was not the last.

Hmm...It could possibly be a sodium deficiency, or maybe it's just not the right way of eating for you. I would say maybe looking into the sodium thing or to just listen to your body and give something else a try. Keto isn't the only way to eat healthy.1
