Anyone else get irritated when they see people lose weight super fast.

So I’ve lost around 23 pounds sense June. I’m very proud of myself, I still have to lose about 40 pounds to lose.
But I’m not going to lie it’s been extremely hard when I see other girls losing 40-50 pounds in 5 months. It seems everywhere I look woman are losing tons of weight super quickly.
I know that I’ve done this in a very healthy way I dunno I just get discouraged when I see how slow my journey is going.

One of the rules of thumb that I try to live by is that someone else's success/ease isn't the cause of my failure/struggle.
Would it really change your life if everyone lost weight at the same rate you did? You'd pretty much be doing what you're doing today. Their speed isn't costing you anything.
I get it is human nature to sometimes look at other people and feel discontent or envy, but I personally feel happier when I actively work to minimize these emotions and manage them other ways.30 -

I’ve been on both sides of this. Times when I’ve been strictly counting calories, watching what I eat, exercising, with my weight loss slow or plateauing while my (male ) partner is dropping kilos without really trying, benefiting from the dinners I carefully plan and portion without him exercising or eating well the rest of the day. Very frustrating! Feels unfair.
But at other times I have streaked past him losing more weight... in this case because he isn’t trying so hard, I have found a diet that works for me, and - I guess what might be relevant to your question- I also have a lots to lose.
The people I am really jealous of are those who are able to maintain a steady weight, especially those who have never been overweight.
I have lost weight fast and slow in the past, yet always put it back on again. It isn’t a race against anyone else, it is a lifelong challenge with myself to crack the code to be able to maintain a steady healthy weight.8 -
Not at all. They don't affect me. All I do is congratulate them!
It might be water weight. It may be that they have a considerably higher TDEE than I do, perhaps starting out at a higher body mass. It could be that they're consuming less calories and working out more than me. Whatever!
Congratz to those who lose quickly, I say! I will continue to plunk away at my own pace.17 -
You can't compare your weight loss to others.
So many things come into play.
Their goals vs yours.
What is each person doing to get to those goals.
Is nutrition perfect 100% of the time?
Is exercise perfect 100% of the time?
Genetics.
etc...
Most of the time when I see someone losing weight quicker than I am, I can tell you #1 it is because they are doing what they need to do to get it done. I, on the other hand, have those days where my nutrition sucks and I don't workout...Usually both at the same time. Just because they lost fast does not mean it is unhealthy, it just means they are putting in the work and getting it done. 40-50 lbs in 5 months is about a 8-10 lb per month average loss and totally healthy & doable.
You could be in this range. It could be that your nutrition and exercises are not set correctly for your goals. It is always good to take a step back and re-evaluate your goals and your plan to get there.7 -
The OP who says we can't compare others weight to ours- hit the nail on the head- I used to get soooo discouraged becuase I am a "turtle" as we say on ww-while others just zip past me- but as soon as i STOP looking at others I found that i culd be proud of my own success- i am now learning to celebrate "any" loss or even maintain- like during christmas holidays- I maintained and that was GREAT for ME-1

Yes, it's frustrating. I find the loss comparison with men to be more frustrating - I am staying within my calories, weighing everything, and getting in lots of workouts and lose one pound, and my husband has one fewer slice of pizza than usual and drops 5 lbs. You kinda have to laugh about it, but at the same time there is that little nagging voice in your head.
I think it's normal to get discouraged from time to time - have you taken a diet break during this time at all? Sometimes just designating a few days where you don't count calories, and just kind of relax with the entire process, can be what you need to mentally reset.
We have those "seriously?" (as my tween would call it) moments with weight loss - I also get them with running. I'll struggle for months to shave 30 seconds of my mile time and someone else will pop in and say "first run in 6 months, 8:30 mile, such a turtle over here, gotta get my running mojo back!"

Most of the people I know who lost weight quickly ended up gaining it back. It takes time to establish good, sustainable habits. Faster isn't necessarily better. And as other posters already said, comparing yourself to others isn't helpful. Envy is a useless emotion.8

Nope. Because I’m doing what’s reasonable for me.
I lost 6 pounds in 3 weeks recently under a massive cut to make weight for something. That’s an ABSURD rate of loss for me. But others do it on the regular.
I was tired, hungry, cranky, weak, cold, didn’t enjoy much of anything, dragged through workouts, felt ill, micromanaged every single calorie that came into my body and spent too much time and effort determining if I could budget 30 calories for carrot sticks.

I am really far more content doing this in a relaxed and very manageable way. I couldn’t sustain anything else. That’s way more important to me than rushing to a finish line.
So anytime I think I might want to lose faster, I think back to those weeks and the feeling passes very quickly lol.12 -
I'll admit that there are times it really does bug me. Yes, I know that ultimately my loss is much healthier, and I know I can sustain it, but it is VERY slow. I know I don't have a ton to lose, I'm in a "healthy" range, but I would prefer to be a bit closer to my goal before slowing down as much as I have.
Reality is that I still also need to stay active, I can't afford to lose muscle, I need to gain strength, and while I have fat to lose, doing both in any appreciable amount is basically impossible. So, I've accepted a slow loss (I'm averaging less than a pound a month over the last year) but my fitness has increased significantly, I've learned the eating habits I need to sustain it, and overall I know it's a solid long term solution.
There are still days when people's much faster "transformations" bug me though!!4 -
I here people who lose it super fast and I honestly doubt they will stick with it. I had a lady in my class who stopped drinking wine for a week and lost 7 pounds. Who knows if she kept it off or went back to drinking.
I lost 128lb in 8 months. Everyone noticed and said something. I hated the comments and gained half of it back.
This time Im aiming for a pound a week weight loss and feel so much better about it!!! The entire process is better. I feel healthier. I am finally learning how to make lifestyle choices. I am not sharing my weight loss. A few people have noticed. Im down 31 with 33 more to go.

It's a matter of setting goals. What is your monthly goal? If it's 8lb/month, you need weekly 2lb of loss. Daily -1000kcal.
Other people hitting their goals has nothing to do with yours.
"healthy" or not, if your goal is to lose 1/2-3/4lb a week, sure, you're doing great. If you're not happy with that, you have to create a larger deficit. -500/day would have you at -34lb right now. -1000/day would have you at
-68lb right now.
This is like golf. You're only competing against yourself. You have the ability to go as fast or slow as you want. Unless you want to *do* what others are doing, don't compare your journey to theirs.2 -

I don't know what those women did to lose the weight, and it's not my place to compare.6 -

I'm not sure easier is the right word for losing weight when you're bigger. CICO is CICO. It might be that your deficit is a higher number when you're big vs when you're small, but you have to consider that losing 1000 cal a day from your lifestyle is still a bear.
It sucks for a smaller person that they 'only' get 1200kcal/day, but they also need a lot fewer calories than I do to survive. That hunger creeps in just the same when at a deficit.8 -

My point was bigger ppl lose weight at a faster pace compared to a person who doesn’t have much to lose..........that’s all.1 -
No. Unless there's a scenario where I can help someone else, thinking about their goals, how they achieve them, and how fast that happens is a waste of my time and emotional energy . . . time and emotional energy I could spend on something productive.
Focusing on what I can influence or control is productive. Focusing elsewhere isn't.
I have other areas where I'm trying to improve, beyond weight management and nutrition. If I were constantly distressed that other people genetically have more athletic potential at my sport, or are better at drawing, or make prettier jewelry, or started learning to play my musical instrument decades ago unlike silly me, or whatever . . . I'd never get a darned thing done. And I'd be unhappier, besides. Why would I want to be unhappier?3 -
The one thing that pisses me off is how when I talk about how I lost 40lbs in 12 months by having a 400 calorie a day deficit and incorporating running into my life only a few were listening. However, a woman I know told how she lost 120lbs in 5 months by eating 800 calories a day and everyone wanted to listen.
They weren't interested how my weight loss was sustainable and hers wasn't. Fast weight loss annoys me as I don't think it can be justified.12 -
I guess what irritates me most is people passing judgement on others. There is no scientifically proven method that works for everyone to lose weight and maintain it long term; there are only countless theories, that all work for some people and not others (keto, low fat, low carb, paleo, vegan, probiotic, high protein, vlcd, hiit, cardio, weightlifting, yoga, etc) - we all have to work out what works for ourselves, and it is not “better” or “worse” than what others do for themselves.3

Don’t get me wrong I’m totally happy for all the other people losing weight!
I also know that if I lost it quicker and cut more calories I would be miserable. I’m battling depression & anxiety and I am currently healthier mentally and physically then I have in a long time.
I have been working out now which is a change for me. I hope to lose at a bit of a faster rate this year.
I’m not at all jealous I just sometimes look at someone who’s lost 50 pounds in 5 months and wish that was me lol 😓
Also I know that I could lose it that quickly but I know I wouldn’t be able to go though the mental journey needed and I wouldn’t keep it off.7 -

A family member of mine started losing weight quickly and at a family get together she received several snarky comments from other family members. Then she told everyone she had cancer.
I mind my own business and don't compare myself to other people. Nothing good ever comes from it and it's a waste of energy.

Nope. I could care less what other people are doing. Usually my first thought is that there are likely losing at too fast a rate and may be sacrificing valuable muscle tissue. Faster isn't better.3

IDK...I guess I lost weight pretty quickly. Are you irritated by me? Also, just because someone loses weight quickly doesn't mean it's all water or they'll gain it all right back again.4
