question for you runners out there

i LOVE running. but the farthest i've EVER run is 4 miles.
i'm training for the Peachtree Road Race in Atlanta, which is a 10K, so I have a little over 2 miles to add to my distance. After I get up to running 6.2 miles, I'd like to work on my time.

I've done quite a handful of 5Ks, and each time I set a new PR. But I have a feeling that I'm running slower than the average female runner.
My question is -- what are yall's finishing times (average) for 5Ks and 10Ks?
I'd just like to see where I am in comparison to the "average".
My last 5K was 28:13...

  • I have been running since September.

    My best 5k was 24:31.

    My best 10k was 50:19.

I don't know how "average" that is, or where I would fall. I know if I could drop a few pounds I'd be faster (I'm 150, 5'8 right now).

I want to do a half marathon in under 2hrs.

I also do a 5k in about 27-28 minutes. I am glad to be out there and don't really worry about speed. I've read that if you do a hill or sprint when you hit a wall you improve speed overtime.

That's not a bad time. I did my first 5K yesterday in 33min.
I'm been running 2 miles for months now.

My next step is to work on my speed also. I'm going to concentrate on interval training to speed up my pace, now that I know I have the endurance.

Good for you!! I have run quite a few 5K's, varying from 24:02 (my PR) to 26:30. (slower when I was marathon training!) My fastest half marathon was 1:59.

I am currently half marathon training and following the FIRST program (you can check at runnersworld for different programs). I have one day of speedwork, one tempo run, and one long run a week.

I think speed work is awesome for training you to run faster! Good luck!

I was just reading up on the FIRST program. Run less and run faster. Would love to hear if you think it is working.

I don't do a lot of 5k's but fastes time was 23:00. Fastest half 1:46. Full 3:58. I have 4 half marathons this spring and summer and maybe another full in the fall.

Wow. You guys are all faster than me!

My best 5k was about 30min. When I'm on the treadmill, I keep a steady ten minute mile. But I'm going to start throwing in some HIIT training, so I hope to up that soon! My goal is to first get to 10k...then really work on my speed. I run faster when I run outside, but it's still too cold for me right now.

I don't really "train" before I run my 8k every year. I run it in about 56 minutes. I do plan on running it faster this year though....so I will be training more instead of just running.

It's working great for me for the first 2 weeks at least! I think I might bump up the pace a little. I haven't done a half in almost 2 years and my last was 1:59 so I'm shooting for that but would really love to go closer to 1:55. The 3 days a week of running works well for me, I'm going to start triathlon training once the weather warms up & I can get on my bike! Good luck on your training as well! :flowerforyou:
