Question for women only

Hello ladies, I thought this question would be right for you because we can relate. I’ve been on the keto diet since November and have missed my period last two months. Has this been an issue for any other female in my position?

How much weight have you lost? Rapid weight loss can cause hormonal changes.7

I’ve lost close to 30 pounds , and yes perhaps the hormones has something to do with it! Thank you 🙂0

You are likely loosing too fast and not getting appropriate nutrition. There's is no need to do keto to lose weight, but if that's what you choose, please do so in a way that you are getting enough calories or nutrients. There are many other problems that could arise like hair loss, skin problems, etc. By the time they show up, you are in deep and will take awhile to fix, I suggest to see your doctor and a registered dietician.22

30 pounds in 3 months is a lot. While a lot of that could have been water weight I recommend dialing it back a bit, maybe even eating at maintenance and seeing if your period comes back. Amenorrhea is the name for when this happens. The cessation of your periods when you're losing weight is a cause for concern as it should not happen in a normal, healthy woman in her reproductive years. Its typically a sign of side effects of your weight loss such as hormonal imbalances and nutritional deficiencies. If it goes on for too long you can end up with irreversible or difficult to reverse reproductive issues. I'm not saying any of this to scare you, but it's not something that should be taken lightly if you value your reproductive health. I personally know a few women who have crash dieted, lost their period, and are still trying to get it back months and even years later. Better safe than sorry!11

I wish, but no. I haven't tried Keto though.0

Missed periods can be harmless, but they can also be a sign of very serious health concerns, including things unrelated to weight loss. I'd echo the call of others saying to consult a doctor.0

I lost 30 pounds last year. I haven’t had a period since May of last year. I’m 39.0

Hasn’t happened to me, I have a mild keto diet, in 2011 I lost 27kg (about 60lbs) in 29 weeks, I don’t recall any effect on my period. I’d recommend talking to your doctor, it may or may not be connected to your diet or another health concern that is worth checking out.0
