Tips after being Sick

I could use some tips on how to start working out again once the flu passes. I’m new to the whole working out thing as it is but I want to get back on track. I was running 3 miles a day and doing full body work outs before getting sick.

I don't think there is anything special you need to do. If your body is not 100% back to normal, make sure you adjust your effort accordingly to not overdo it. But once you are back, just go at it like you used to. Your body will remember how to do it.2

Get back as soon as you feel able. Maybe ease back into it, and just listen to your body. It'll tell you if it's too much too soon. But get back as soon as you can so you don't lose the habit. Kinda going through the same right now. I just got over a cold a week ago, and it's been hard to want to get back.1

Just go slow! I'm more than six weeks out from the flu and still coughing like crazy, so my workouts have been significantly lighter than usual. Slow or reduced cardio, longer rests between weight sets, slower increase of weights lifted.... I'm also having to manage my energy way more than usual. If I try to push through a workout and go at the levels I did in December, I'm wiped out for the rest of the day. Dozing off at my desk wiped out! I'm sure that no flu is good for whoever gets it, but I feel like this year's strain has been particularly nasty. Just start with baby steps and go from there.2

Maybe start with going for a few easy walks and see how you feel. I was down for a few weeks and eased back into my running routine gradually by doing a few days of easy walking first0

Go take a brisk walk outdoors for 30 to 60 minutes depending on how you feel. Ramp up the pace and duration. Once you can do it for 60 minutes at a 15 minute mile pace, you’ll be ready to resume where you left off with your running. Be safe and smart.0

If you're new to working out then running every day is a lot0 -
Working out is great but it’s only 15% of the effort to tone up and lose weight if that’s your goal. Diet is everything but while you’re sick you must be sure to eat very well and get your rest. Do not work out until you’re fully recovered.0
