What should my home gym have?

I was wondering what fitness equipment people have at home? I am looking for simple equipment ideas that I can use watching tv or breaks I gain threw out the day.

*Edit*
I think Samiwhereareyou and cruisinamy have great points. A lot of us do not have the finances to buy gym memberships or to spend money on expensive home equipment. Even if you can afford to buy expensive equipment we do not all have the knowledge on how to properly use them or create a routine.

So my new question is how do you guys over come these obstacles?

Dumbells :-) you can make all excercises harder by including your dumbells!
    A mat - for stomach w/outs
medicine Balls, Kettle Bells, Fit Balls..............
Barbell - you could use that in squats, chest presses etc.
    Skipping Rope - Cardio
There are so many awesome things you can use and buy!

I never thought about a stepper to use in front of the tv. I think part of my problem is that I don't want to turn off the tv to go work out.

Since I had to give up my gym member ship to save money I invested in a good pair of running shoes and a pull up bar. I haven't looked back.

free weights - 3 lb and/or 5 lbs... and 8 lb if you want more challenge on bicep exercises.
mat (yoga mat) -- more cushion for situps, pushups -- all floor exercises
resistance band -- so many exercises can be done with this.

I've been eyeing a kettlebell at the sporting goods store that comes with a Bob Harper (Biggest Loser) workout DVD! good deal so you know what exercises to do with it!

along those lines -- my gym also features DVD collections... Turbo Fire is my weapon of choice. I also bought Jillian Michael's 30 day Shred on iTunes so I throw that 20 min workout in on days I have a lot of energy - she uses free weights and a mat.

I would say various levels of reistance bands. They are a great way to add strength training at home and you can do so many more types of workouts with them then dumbells.

I have an elliptical machine, PowerBlocks, BOSU, yoga mat, some resistance bands, DVDs, and a TRX suspension kit. And I haven't used any of it in longer than I'd like to admit.

It's not about what you have, it's what you do with it. You can do more with a pair of good runners and bodyweight exercises than you think...

The most crucial component of a home gym is motivation!

Your right feydruss. I wish we could buy motivation. I start off well and then once I realize I am busting my butt for no result I give up; which is why I have not been on here for months. I wish working out didn't feel like work, if it was fun I would be ok. How dose everyone else get over these feelings of lack of motivation?
