Please help me build a case for NET CALORIES over just stand alone calories. My friend is trying to eat JUST 900-1200 calories per day to lose weight , and doesn’t understand how important net calories are..

When you work out more your body needs more energy. If you don't give your body enough energy, bad things happen. You can lose muscle mass, lose your hair, have fatigue, nasuea, and a whole bunch of other not good stuff. And it's not even effective for weight loss, as you're more likely to yoyo back because those type of diets are harder to maintain.4

If shes not going to heed the advice of a concerned friend or look into the various resources explaining the dangers of a very low calorie diet then I doubt she'll listen to a bunch of internet strangers. Have you tried telling her why they're important? For instance, explain to her that such few calories can result in hormone imbalances, hair loss, crippling fatigue, weakened immune system, muscle loss, amenorrhea and more?7

Just do you, boo.
Your friend is going to have to learn this one the hard way. Like we all do.
He/she will understand when he/she loses her hair, gets depression, fatigue, loss of concentration and focus and just wants to sleep all the time.
That said, I've lost weight on really low calories before - especially when I was young and didn't know any better. It's not fun.12 -
Perhaps your friend needs some basic education on what calories are and why your body needs them? This page is geared towards children but it has a nice, easy explanation. It also shows that she's eating less than a child would eat and that can't be healthy in the long term since she's an adult, right?

And here's a chart showing rough calorie guidelines at various ages:
Of course someone who is shorter or less active won't need as many calories as a taller, more active person. However your friend should be consuming more than what a toddler needs.
