How can I stay fit with a broken ankle?

One month into my get fit attempt I fell down stairs and broke my foot and ankle in four places. I had lost 7 pounds and had just started walking for exercise. Now I'm off my leg for 12 weeks plus. Any suggestions about what I can do to continue getting fit and losing weight while getting the nutrition I need to heal?

Ouch, sorry to hear about your injury. You can definitely do some limited workouts from a seated position (check youtube, there's loads). If you have crutches then just hopping around on those is bound to take quite a bit of effort! Mostly, I'd suggest just keeping to calorie goal, though. Readjust your settings to 'sedentary' if that helps, just for now, and it'll be fine.1

I wouldn't worry about losing weight right now. You want your ankle to heal strong, right? I advise setting your goal to maintenance and your activity level to sedentary, and follow your doctor's advise regarding movement and putting weight on your ankle.1

Hey there... I've broken my ankle and foot about two weeks ago. I luckily didn't have to have surgery. I was non weight bearing for two weeks and am now in a walking boot (as of today) and supposed to be weight bearing, but I am still using crutches as it hurts. I am hoping to start some upper body workouts tomorrow. I have also set MFP to sedentary which took off 130 calories/day for me, Ugh. Just trying to stick to nutrition for now (and honestly, it's what helped me lose most of my weight thus far) and making sure that I do all that I can to stay healthy. I also developed DVT (deep vein thrombosis - blood clot in my calf) from ONE WEEK of wearing a stupid cast, so now on blood thinners. 🙄 Anyway, friend me if you want to commiserate and/or support each other.0

Agree that you can just concentrate on food for now. But if you still want to make gains fitness wise, there are things you can do. You can do pretty much any upper body workout (sans things like pushups unless you are on your knees). There are a few pieces of cardio equipment that just use upper body like the ski-erg or a hand crank bike if you gym has either of those. You could probably do machines for lower body if you move the contact pad to hit higher up on the shins rather than the ankle. So you could do leg extensions, hamstring curls, adductor and abductor exercises on the machines. You could even do leg stuff lying on your back using ankle straps (again adjust position for comfort) with the cable machine. I broke both my foot and knee last year and had to learn how to get really creative.0
