Hi so I am trying to get in shape but can't seem to jog or run.

I want to but need advice on how to make it happen.

I walk for 30 mins OR do the stairmaster for 30 mins.

I have tried jog and min walk a min but only last about 10 mins max with that.

Is there something I can do or do I need to drop pounds before I can do it?

    try out c25k.

it's set to be done in 9 weeks, but if you are a complete nonrunner (like i was) then take as many weeks as you need for each session. best of luck to you!
  • The best program (for me) has been C25K (www.c25k.com). It is a 9-week program that takes you from a couch potato to a 5k. You start off slowly, a little running with your walking, and work your way up. I am currently in week 7 and can run 25 minutes straight, and when I started I couldn't run 2 minutes without almost collapsing.

When you say it only lasts 10 minutes, do you mean you get tired and can't keep jogging, or... ?

If you're getting tired, then that's just part of the deal. It takes time to build stamina. Try alternating jogging/walking if you can't maintain the jog.

If you're doing 1 min run 1 min walk and only lasting 10 minutes, slow down the runs. When I started running the county road I walked on had mile markers. I decided to try to run from one to the next one. I got about a quarter mile that day. The next day I slowed it down and got about a half mile. It took me 5 days to get the right speed to cover a full mile. I did it in about 13 minutes. I was able to walk it in 14.5 min, so I wasn't going much faster than my walking speed but I was moving. It only took a few weeks and I was running 3 miles and got faster. A year later I ran my first marathon. That took me almost 4 and a half hours but I ran every step of it.
  • Trust me on this one... It took me about a month to start running/jogging for over 10 minutes. Just keep on running/jogging and you will build up endurance. Also be sure to get enough rest since you are just starting out.

increase the time of your walking intervals, decrease your speed.

    Hi all.

Just wanted to update you guys.

I was able to jog a min and walk a min for 25 mins straight yesterday.

Then I did 5 mins on the stairmaster just to make it 30 mins.

I was so tired but it felt soooooooo good.

Thanks for all your replys to keep trying I am glad I did.

I am going to keep this up!
