Educating yourself and label Reading

The commercials are driving me nuts regarding HCFS (High Fructose Corn Syrup). Most people are going to buy into the non-sense that they are saying on their PSA and will continue to purchase cereal, breads, crackers, cookies, etc with this stuff in it.................
They are lying to us and HCFS is killing us!!!
Please, please read labels and DO NOT purchase foods made with HCFS. IT IS NOT good for us, even in moderation...................
It is all Propaganda and LIES!!!
They say "it's nutritionally the same as sugar and fine in moderation."
It's impossible to practice moderation if you are those people that eat anything other than what they find in the produce or the meat department. They are putting this cheap addictive crap in EVERYTHING!!!
**Please note, I'm not talking about those of us here that are reading labels and eating low carb.
The general public though is ingesting HFCS in everything they eat - bread, deli meat, anything that comes in a box, can, bottle or jar. Even though things say "ZERO CARBS" you'll still find HFCS in that list of ingredients somewhere. Try to find a loaf of bread without it - I dare you! (Other than some that you can find at a health food store for $5 a loaf).
I'm just basically on a rant. They are killing us with this stuff. Not to mention what the massive production of corn is doing to our environment. Those commercials make me more angry than positive towards HFCS!!
**climbing down off my soapbox now**

ok... so why is it so bad? You didn't say. I mean, obviously no sugar is good for you in large amounts. I'm a firm believer in moderation though, so tell me, why is it so bad?0

it really is not sugar..it is man made sugar substitute the main reason they use it is because it acts as a preservative unlike natural.. and of course it is cheaper
.moderation is good ...but with "clean" stuff...HFCS ....check the web...it is crap for you
if you want to get clean you pretty much need to avoid it0 -

One of the greatest ways we can improve our health is to eliminate high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) from our diets.
What is HFCS?
HFCS is not the run of the mill corn syrup found on the grocery store shelf, nor is it the fructose naturally found in fruits and honey. HFCS is a highly refined clear liquid derived from corn starch. Food manufactures love to use it because of its long shelf life an it's relative low cost.
Why is HFCS Bad for us?
Since HFCS's widespread introduction in the 1980's North American obesity rates have skyrocketed. Obesity has been linked to may heath issues including heart disease and many forms of cancer. When HFCS is ingested, it travels straight to the liver which turns the sugary liquid into fat, and unlike other carbohydrates HFCS does not cause the pancreas to produce insulin; which acts as a hunger quenching signal to the brain. So we get stuck in a vicious cycle, eating food that gets immediately stored as fat and never feeling full.
Where is HFCS found?
HFCS is found in almost everything we eat today. However, the worst culprit has to be soft drinks. A single 12 oz can of cola has up to 13 tsp of sugar, most of it fructose from HFCS. There is HFCS hidden in many of our other food as well, like ketchup, relish, cookies, and most alarmingly in low-fat diet foods. Manufactures substitute HFCS for the fat in food like mayo and salad dressings, then mark them as diet foods.
How Can We Avoid HFCS?
Avoiding HFCS will take a lifestyle change for the better. The first food to go has to be the soft drinks; this includes fruit punch, fruit cocktails, and Kool-Aid since they are all laden with HFCS.
Second, eat more meals at home. Restaurant foods are mostly prepackaged foods reheated and served to you. Use of HFCS in these foods is wide spread because of their increased shelf life.
Third, diet while you shop. Since you are going to be eating most of your meals at home, you're going to want to fill your cupboards with the best foods. While shopping, read the labels, if HFCS, fructose, or modified corn starch appears within the first five ingredients place it back on the shelf an move on. Sounds easy right? Wrong. As you make your way through the store you will begin to realize just how much of what you have been eating on a daily basis contains HFCS.
Reducing HFCS will not alway be easy, but the health benefits are well worth it. You will feel stronger and more vital, it will lift your mood and give you increased concentration. Limiting your intake of HFCS will not only shrink your midsection but also do wonders for your over all health.0 -
Article after article.................................
Do some research on it!! There is NOTHING AND I MEAN NOTHING good about it.............
It is food poisoning..................

ok but that doesn't answer my question. I'm also not a "clean" eater. I eat a wide variety of foods, some clean (well most clean) and some not. What about it is so bad I mean, are there health problems associated with it? So it's manmade... ok, but so are artificial sweeteners. Like I said, moderation seems to work for me. But for my own personal knowledge I'm wondering WHY it's so bad. What does it do or not do that makes it so awful :huh:0 -

true and true....since I cut out the HFCS, my energy and the way I feel are UP and UP
true, I have changed alot of things to get the energy and feeling good but cutting HFCS is a big part of it0 -
Okay I went and did a check and this is what I found. I went to the Mayo Clinc web site and this is what they had to say:
High-fructose corn syrup is a common sweetener and preservative. High-fructose corn syrup is made by changing the sugar (glucose) in cornstarch to fructose — another form of sugar. The end product is a combination of fructose and glucose. Because it extends the shelf life of processed foods and is cheaper than sugar, high-fructose corn syrup has become a popular ingredient in many sodas, fruit-flavored drinks and other processed foods.
So far, research has yielded conflicting results about the effects of high-fructose corn syrup. For example, various early studies showed an association between increased consumption of sweetened beverages (many of which contained high-fructose corn syrup) and obesity. But recent research — some of which is supported by the beverage industry — suggests that high-fructose corn syrup isn't intrinsically less healthy than other sweeteners, nor is it the root cause of obesity.
While research continues, moderation remains important. Many beverages and other processed foods made with high-fructose corn syrup and other sweeteners are high in calories and low in nutritional value. Regularly including these products in your diet has the potential to promote obesity — which, in turn, promotes conditions such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and coronary artery disease.
If you're concerned about the amount of high-fructose corn syrup or other sweeteners in your diet, consider these tips:
Limit processed foods.
Avoid foods that contain added sugar.
Choose fresh fruit rather than fruit juice or fruit-flavored drinks. Even 100 percent fruit juice has a high concentration of sugar.
Choose fruit canned in its own juices instead of heavy syrup.
Drink less soda.
Don't allow sweetened beverages to replace milk, especially for children.0 -

ahhh ok, so the point is it makes us fat. Obviously not a good thing, but many other things make us fat as well. Don't get me wrong, it doesn't sound GOOD for me, I'm not going to seek it out in foods I eat. I just don't see the huge cause for concern... maybe I'm missing something.0 -

Sugar is okay in moderation, when ingested in it's raw, simplest form. But all the enzymes, fiber, vitamins, and minerals are destroyed during the refining processed. Refined sugar, a simple carbohydrate, had been linked to hypoglycemia, yeast overgrowth, a weakened immune system, hyperactivity, attention deficit disorder, enlargement of the liver and kidneys, increase of uric acid in the blood, mental and emotional disorders, dental cavities, and an imbalance of neurotransmitters in the brain. And that's just refined cane sugar. High fructose corn syrup is even sweeter and more processed. Manufacturers love its versatility, farmers love its inexpensiveness. Like refined sugar, it has a negative, dramatic effect on blood sugar levels. According to studies by the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, diabetes and obesity are DIRECTLY linked to eating refined sugar and high fructose corn syrup.
Don't stop eating cookies. Just eat cookies with healthy alternatives cooked into 'em. Agave nectar is my #1. It's a high nutrient, raw sweetener that contains vitamins and minerals and no processing chemicals. Also, it absorbs slowly into the bloodstream, and doesn't have a significant impact on blood-sugar levels. Also, there are various brands and origins of vegan evaporated cane juice ("vegan" because refined sugars are filtered using charred animal bones- EW?!), if you need sugar for baking. They still contain the fiber and nutrients- and flavor!- that conventional processed white sugar lacks.

HFCS is not something that you want to eat, even in Moderation..................
Clean eating is the way to go.
The only sweetner I use is Stevia, no others at all.
High Fructose Corn Syrup is not something you want to have, even in moderation...............0 -
Thank you Dave! Simply put, the healthier a product claims to be or the producer of that product claims it to be the more likely it is to be the unhealthiest choice you can make for yourself!
If you want to read a good book that will give you great insight into our obsession with diet and food and how we claim to be making healthier products read "in Defense of Food" by Michael Pollan.
Food manufacturer's DO NOT have our best interest at heart, they have their bottom line in sight and that is it!

it is truly and really scary how much power the food industry has...all the guidelines and "stuff" need to be questioned and thought about....for those who don't want to "eat clean" that is fine...it can be a bit tought...BUT MAN! it is so worth it

I agree with you there Dave!!!
Clean eating is where its at...............
You have a message too.0 -
This interested me so I went to a few links and read this "Minimizing intake of dietary fructose is essential to mitigating its potentially dangerous effects. Sources of dietary fructose include HFCS, fruit juices, honey, and table sugar (sucrose; comprising fructose and glucose)."
It seems HFCS has significantly more fructose, if we get too much fructose it can cause some problems. But fructose is also in every day sugar, honey etc. but in slightly lesser amounts. In my mind people should be cutting down on sweets in general (which for me is hard), I don't agree that HFCS is all to blame for people ingesting too much fructose.0 -

There are many, many more sites that will explain to you that HCFS is Poisonous and addictive.......
It makes your body never get "full" so you keep craving more and more junk.
It is really not like raw honey, fruit, veggies, etc...............0
