Anti-calorie counting story on On Point right now. Very frustrating.

If everyone just agreed on calorie counting, what would people fill talk radio hours, and blog pages with? People need something to write about and something to talk about. So "actually, it's not the calories" makes for more interesting reading and writing. But it usually comes down to some over-complicated explanation about how a person is actually doing something that is calories in vs calories out.
I think we will all agree that calorie counting may not be the best choice for every single individual. Maybe some people do better on a specific type of diet, or "intuitive" eating (although many of us intuitively ate ourselves to obesity, which is why we are here), and that's great for them. But so many of us are a testament to the effectiveness of calorie counting it seems silly for some to try to discount it.
Long term weight loss, and keeping it off, is hard, no matter the method. So that some people struggle with it on calorie counting shouldn't be a reason to just throw it out.6 -
Why? What's frustrating? I read the first couple lines of the article and quickly realized and disagree completely. I don't need any media to tell me what is right for me as far as food and nutrition.0

I think it’s frustrating to send the message that calorie counting is hard or doesn’t work. I’ve lost 40 pounds on MFP and have been surprised at how simple it has actually been and how accurate the calculations seem to be in spite of individual differences.3

Did you hear my scathing comment read on air?
"Your guest is full of nonsense. Everyone I know that has been successful with weight loss has counted calories. I've lost 170 pounds and I've kept it off through....you've guessed it, calories in vs. calories out. I gained some of the weight back when I got lax with calorie counting. Guess what? I'm losing again when I started being more careful with my calories."4 -

Ah, gotcha. This clarification makes sense. Yes, it's silly and wrong to still be telling people that not all calories are equal and that counting calories doesn't work.0 -
I have lost 25# so far on MFP but I admit that in the earliest days, I was concentrating on limiting sugar, sodium and poor carbs because of pre-diabetes. I then reached a point that my Doctor suggested it was more important to increase calories burned to ensure my weight loss continued. I like that MFP helps me identify both the calories, and the nutrition. When you are limiting the amount you eat, you want those calories to count; keeping you feeling satisfied, to keep you fuelled for increased activity, and to keep health issues controlled.0
