I pretty much figured out everything it says in this article by trial and error over the nearly 6 years I’ve been working out. Keeping a balance of water and electrolytes is extremely important. The body pretty much let’s you know what it needs, it’s just that sometimes we don’t listen :#

I agree. It was helpful to have some of the science behind it explained.

The author is the founder of Precision Hydration. I read their information on line last year, then took their online "sweat test" to get an idea of specific recommendations for me during extended training sessions in warm weather. I've followed their suggested pre race and on course hydration strategies during my training build last July/August and really noticed the difference in performance and in my post session recovery.

i remember doing the death trudge at mile 20 of the run at IM Chattanooga...to this day i'm surprised i made it that far - my nutrition plan went flying out the window...and then this angel swooped down and said here take this (he was official course support) and he handed me a little vial of salt (I still remember him trying to explain it to me - kind of like how you do a tequila shooter) - i took a lick and another one and the brain fog started to clear and i finished

i'm much more concious of my salt intake during races now (as well as in the 2-3 days leadup)

I carry little salt packets from fast food places in my running belt, just in case. It’s really saved me a few times! (of course I carry water too) It took awhile to get my bf on board about the salt when we go running together but once he saw what a difference it made, he carries them now as well.

At the risk of exposing what a geek I really am, I now mix and consume specific amounts of PHmix & water the night before a long effort, then again upon waking, then at regular intervals during the event.

@deannafisher - nothing like a tequila shooter during an IM run to dull the pain!! Extra salt, hold the lemon :D

On really hot days when I work hard and sweat a lot, I come home with this strong thirst. Water doesn't quench it, I can drink glass after glass and not be any less thirsty. Electrolyte replacement stuff makes the thirst go away.

My cat will lick my arms when I get home all sweaty. Which means my sweat is salty.

I crave salt during the summer and in ski trips. I used to date a lady with hypertension and she was alarmed to watch me pour salt over everything I ate. Salt cravings go away during the shoulder season when I don't get enough exercise. (My blood pressure was 115/75 a couple weeks ago at the dentist's office, and I wasn't happy to be there.)

That's because you know the rule: It doesn't have to be pretty, endurance sports are simply about getting the job done!!
