Getting ready to treat the kids to a meal at a Mexican restaurant. Trying to play it safe and pre-planning what to eat. So, what's healthier; Fajita Chicken Taco Salad or Fajitas sans tortillas?

Either just watch dressing and/or sides like rice, sour cream, guacamole........

    Enjoy!!!!

I'm gonna take a stab and say Fajitas, no tortillas. That's what I personally usually go for myself.
Taco salads are usually fairly big, and can have a lot of extras in them ya know? For me the grilled veggies and meat with some guacamole is usually what I do. Which is great because fajitas are actually my fave mex thing anyways. ;)

i just saw a blurb on this on the Today show. They said the healthiest thing to order is the fajitas and try not to eat more than one or two of the tortillas. With the lean meat (beef or chicken or seafood) and all the veggies you can't go wrong. I also like the stuffed polanaos, but be careful of the melted cheese. Hope this helps!
  • Either, I would say though to stay away from the Fried Tortilla bowl that they put the Taco salad in :)

Get the Chicken Fajita. Don't use cheese or the other fattening stuff. Don't eat the chips! Those get me every time. No margaritas either.

Ugh. The chips are the death of me!!
  • I love mexican food. I've been opting for naked burritos lately, chicken, black beans, rice, cheese, pico de gallo. But salads are always my other choice. Just do a nice workout and you'll be able to eat pretty much anything on the menu.
  • Mexican food can be very healthy if you know how to order. Unfortunately, most mexican places serve free chips and salsa to start and this is one of the MAJOR calorie bombs. It's hard to resist, but you have to stick to about 8 chips for 150 calories! I have asked for a side of veggies and been charged $1 or $2, but it was worth it to dip in the housemade salsa! I would also stay away from margaritas, as they can be upwards of 500 calories! As for a meal, I stick to a mexican salad- NOT a taco salad. I get lettuce, tomato, black beans, grilled chicken, a little guacamole and salsa, and then use a ton of hot sauce. Stay away from quesadillas, tacos, anything that has a fried shell or carb base is always greasy! Unless of course this can be a cheat meal for you, then I'd say get whatever you want! But when I go on a day thats not my cheat day, its a really delicious way to eat out at a restaurant but still keep it healthy!

If they have Molcajete, I order that. Its a stew of beef, chicken and pork swimming in a delicious thick green chili sauce. Its served with a plate of salsa, cheese, guac, lettuce and sour cream so you can control what you put on them. I LOVE them with the corn tortillas! Theres usually enough in one serving for 3 or 4 people - I always share it with my hunny and have enough left over for lunch the next day!

If you go the salad route, be sure to ask for it without the fried tortilla bowl. That thing is a killer!

Most places will have some sort of grilled chicken dish. Chicken Acapulco is a good one...served with some veggies on top. The fajitas should be a good choice.

Thanks y'all! I opted for chicken fajita salad which was actually a grilled chicken salad except the chicken was fajita chicken :) got dressing on the side and dipped a few pieces into it. Put 2 spoonfuls of salsa into the salad. Ate the chicken and some veggies. Did have a margarita though... And some chips, but I had around 1800 calories to eat and still managed to be under :) helps burning 1300 calories in exercise ;)
