Embarrassing gym stories

So another post reminded me of one of my worst gym experiences, and I thought it would be fun to commiserate and share a few of our best "worst" gym experiences. And remind ourselves that some of our most embarrassing moments are generally just funny stories in waiting!
I am 43 years old, and I've been doing solo work on the circuit machines for a while. I'm not amazing, but have made significant improvement. My Mom recently moved in with us, and to help keep her more social and moving I was encouraging her to take a couple classes at our gym. So I decided to audit the "Easy Does it, Seniors and Extreme Beginners" class for her. Shortly after starting I remembered why I don't do aerobic style classes. I have ZERO coordinational or rythmic movement skills. I also have a really bad sense of direction. So I zigged while everyone else zagged, but I also did it several steps behind, if I managed to do it at all. Fine. Whatever, maybe I can come with Mom enough and I'll at least learn the movements enough to fake it. About halfway through, I realise I am getting a muscle spasm in my arm. *kitten*. I am prone to these in my arms and they get BAD. Absolutely 13 on the hospital pain scale, no circulation to my fingers, cannot move it bad sometimes, and so I don't take them lightly. But I'll be damned if I'm going to to let all these seniors see me quit. Seeing me try and fail miserably is somehow a much preferable option. No problem, I'll just stop using that arm and let it rest, while only working on the other side. Ok, good, this is working. I can doOH DAMN! Now my other arm is starting up. Long story a tiny bit shorter, I ended up curled up in a chubby ball of pain, waiting for my meds to work, while a bunch of senior citizens literally excercised circles around me.

LOL. There's a song that's been playing on the gym sound system. I love the words.
A 100 bad days made
A 100 good stories
A 100 good stories make me
Interesting at parties5 -
Bought new leggings and toddled along to zumba. Found out about 30 seconds into the class that the elastic in the waist was completely inadequate and all they wanted to do was fall down. I managed to use a hair bobble to twist the waist band tighter.....that meant I had about 3 minutes between needing to hoick them back up again.
This was just before I started buying proper fitness leggings with ties at the waist!
2 years later my favourite leggings split at the crotch while I was squatting. Big knickers are your friend!

dropped a 25 lb weight on my foot. sat on the floor and fought feeling losing consciousness. nobody helped! deleted membership right after out of embarrassment and irk.8

I do Krav Maga, which is a type of martial art. I'm pretty good with the boxing and striking part of it, but I struggle with kicking. I am not very flexible, plus I live in Latin America, so pretty much everyone grew up playing soccer and learning how to kick things, where I did not. One of the classes, we were working on high kicks. I was starting to feel pretty good about myself. My kicks were starting to get higher and I was feeling like I was finally getting it. So I went for it. For one big showy high kick. Started off nice, and as I reached the top, lost my balance with my other foot and slipped and planted myself face first on the mat in front of the rest of the class.
I embarrass myself fairly frequently in class, but that one stood out.8 -
Oooh thats jsut reminded me of the time i managed to fall over and land on my *kitten* in zumba when i thought id cracked this fancy move with one leg in the air!4

One time I fell after jumping off a box jump. Another time I fell I to a bush while jogging. Both were embarrassing but the only thing to do is move past it!5

When I was in 7th grade, I went to the YMCA with a friend for a step aerobics class. I was already nervous, because my friend and I were the youngest ones there, and I was the fattest person in the room. I thought- well, this isn't going to be so bad! All these older ladies cant possibly move that fast- let's give it a shot! WRONG !!! I was also less coordinated than I thought- I was stepping with the wrong feet and almost fell several times, I accidentally slapped my friend in the face, and during a part of the routine where we had to move to board to our right, then back to ours on the left, I knocked a middle age lady flat on her butt when I zigged instead of zagged.
Not a gym story, but I had bought a yoga ball several years ago to workout at home. The first exercise on the DVD was to lay on the ball facedown. No sooner than I did that, I faceplanted into the floor 😂2 -
I fell a sleep after my workout
I was in class and we where doing toe tap on a bosu thing. Well i must of hit it hard because i flew back ward's and landed on my butt5 -
I went into the mens locker room on accident. They have the exact same layout... it was early in the morning so no one was in there except one man who came out of the showers while I was wandering around opening lockers looking for my stuff. I just turned around and power walked the kitten out of there without saying a word I was so embarrassed. I switched to afternoon workouts after that.6

A few, and I'm sure a few more will crop up as I relive my past life.
I dropped my ipad off the elliptical and broke the screen. It made one of those really loud, echo-y noises that makes everyone stop in their tracks.
I nearly used a machine that the "very sweaty man" (as we dubbed him" hadn't cleaned. He never cleaned his machine after using it. It was a very small apartment gym. The lady behind me went "wait wait wait!" loud and saved me the embarrassment of actually sitting on it, at least.
Oh, I was also the kid that accidentally peed their pants during gym in elementary school. Yep, that was me.8 -
Dropped a 45-lb. plate on my foot and immediately killed my toenail. Fell getting out of the shower, butt naked, one time and sprained my wrist.5

During yoga class, someone called me (I’m so not the leave your phone on person!!!!) and in the process of stressfully trying to shut it off, I set off the emergency/SOS alarm, go me! I was very unpopular that day!!! 🥺5

Did the same thing last year, except I fractured the top of my foot. I could barely limp out of the gym. Lost the toenail doing roller derby.1 -
Thought I turned off the stair stepper machine, but didn't. Rode it to the bottom and almost did a face plant.1
-
Turned to get off a treadmill as it was slowing down, slipped off the end, and fell to the floor with a thud! I jumped up, yelled "Ta da!" and several people had a good laugh at my expense.12

BodyPump...tricep track. Hit myself pretty hard in the head with a 5kg dumbell whilst doing overhead extensions! Saw stars but carried on somehow!0
-
I put the lock on my locker and went off to my workout. Returned afterwards, unlocked the lock, and all my stuff was gone! I freaked out and was telling some ladies how someone stole my stuff. One of them opened the locker NEXT to the one I had locked, and...yep, there it was. <I can never go back there, lol>6

Laid down on a flat bench seat to do skull crushers but the seat was not stable. So when I went back I rolled off of the side onto the floor face down3
-
I'm realizing when I've told all those posters who had gym anxiety it was "all in their heads." I was wrong.3

Oh good I'm not the only one who's had an embarrassing moment at the gym! One time, I tried using the assisted lift chin up machine. I thought I had it on the right weight level (I didn't) and when I climbed onto the platform, it sunk down like a stone. I dangled from the bar for a moment as I figured out how to carefully climb down from the platform without killing myself. I got off it okay, but it was funny as hell.2

First time I went to the gym, I had already lost 100 pounds and was starting to feel more comfortable doing things with my body.. and im on this equiptment for arms, so im sitting, pulling this bar.. minding my own... and some fit fit guy walks in front of me talking on his cell phone... stops right in front of me.. and says... loudly...YEAH SHES PRETTY AND EVERYTHING BUT I WOULD NEVER F**K A FAT CHICK... and then he just kept walking...5
-
I got a little cocky with my bench press....made it off the rack and down to my chest but...that was it. Had to squirm from underneath the bar ....another time I asked to work in on a machine ... and the kid (I am 55 years old and everyone is a kid to me) looked at me and said "shouldn't you be home baking cookies"... to which I replied "shouldn't you be at home with a sock on your right hand".... of course in this scenario he was embarrassed not me. Little jerk.8

There's a few. Any time I have tried to do jazzercise with my mom (She stopped inviting me about two years ago during my visits home, she says it's the money but I don't believe her, lol).
At 14 I fell off a treadmill.
A couple years ago tried to do sit ups on the yoga ball and fell flat on my back.
First time swimming laps (since middle school swim team) and I had no idea about any "rules" and couldn't see because I didn't have prescription goggles so I was unknowingly in the "walkers" lane just chilling trying to get my bearings and couldn't figure out why people were just staring at me waiting for me to do something.
Decided to try kettlebells using an app on my phone as a guide and I'm so not coordinated, I don't even know what happened but I had to explain to the confused laughing woman next to me that it was my first time with the kettlebells....that was the last time with them too doing anything other than the basic swing.
I once invited a new parent in town that I met at the park to the YMCA. I figured she'd want a guide around the gym so I talked....a lot. I never heard back from her.
I know that's definitely not all but those are the ones I can think of at the moment. I can mostly laugh at myself. None of those experiences have stopped me from going to the gym or working out! I also love threads like these so I know I'm not the only one, lol.5 -
Bought what I thought were grey gym pants and wore them to the gym. I had a good workout and was sweating quite a bit. I guess this material was not as sweat wicking as they claimed to be and they showed a large amount of “crotch sweat”. Of course I didn’t notice this for some time as I was focused on my workout. It looked as though I peed myself!!! Ugh... my boyfriend said someone probably snap chatted you... lol not the most therapeutic response to what happened!1

Can't think of any specific instances of really embarassing gym specific moments..
Except for, Did you ever have that kid who farted really loud in gym class? That kid was me. 20 years later, nothing has changed, lol. Every single time I get working out I get gassy. It is always a little embarrassing to be going along and let out a loud or smelly one on accident. I just keep going like nothing happened, and hope no one noticed... I suppose there is a bonus to working out at home as I tend to do.1 -
I was between jobs for a while, and decided to use the time to try out some different classes at the gym. I'd always thought Swiss ball looked kind of fun, for example. And to be fair, it was.
But it might have been even more fun if I hadn't fallen off the ball in slow-mo and sent it rolling across the room.
Twice.
I never went back...1 -
I know I've posted this in other threads like this, but...
Peeing on the platform while deadlifting. Sometimes it's just a couple drops and you can just pretend your water bottle dripped. Sometimes, though....
I'm glad I work out at a powerlifting/bodybuilding gym where everyone is used to it. It is pretty funny when there's a new member. The horrified look on their face. I printed this and taped it up near the deadlifting platforms:
