Has anyone decided to just eat to only only lose a half a pound a week? I’m not referring to people that have the last 10 or 15 pounds to go. Can someone tell me if it really works. I’m tired of stressing over dieting. I just need a little more calories.

If you're in any kind of deficit you will lose weight. If you're comfortable with half a pound a week go for it, ultimately you have to do what's going to help you stick to the plan.7

It absolutely works. The only potemtial obstacle is that it leaves a very small margin of error, therefore accurate logging becomes paramount.8

Hi. I just posted in another thread that my weight loss over the year has come down to 20 lbs in 12 months--about 1.5 lbs/month. I lost at a higher rate in the good weather months and then really struggled just to maintain over winter. Had anyone told me a year ago that this is what it would be like, I'd have given up then with, "Well, what's the point then?" But I am so glad to be starting back this month at 20 lbs fewer than last year. I'm glad to have figured out how to get through most of the winter without gaining a lot back (I lost close to 25, gained back 5). I have set my cals for 0.5 lbs/week and will eat that much--it matters to have enough food. I will probably lose faster, but this way I won't worry about it. At this rate, it will *seem* like forever before I'm where I want to be--but, nothing else was working to get me started, and this did. So do what feels right for you. As long as you are losing and getting healthier, a slower rate is fine. Better to lose slowly than not at all.8

I lost all of my 25 at a half pound per week. I wasn't concerned with speed, wanted to preserve muscle and am small with little activity outside intentional exercise. It was the best way for me to get enough calories to not feel like I was suffering. I definitely used a food scale because a small deficit has little room for error. I averaged a half pound per week, but the scale only moved every three weeks or so as the loss was often masked by water weight fluctuations. It worked well for me. I also ate all of my exercise calories which helped a ton.6

You can lose weight just fine at 0.5 lb/week, but keep in mind that you will have a small deficit and a few logging errors can wipe it out. With a small deficit, it becomes even more important to weigh all your food.2

Sure you can! Been there, doing that as I tiptoe into maintenance. The problem is, it can be difficult to see progress due to water weight fluctuations and therefore discouraging. I found weighing daily and using a weight trending app very helpful in that regard.6

If you have a phone, download the free Happy Scale. It's hard to see your progress at 0.5 lbs. per week loss, what with daily water fluctuations, but if you record your weight on the app you'll see the downward trend and it'll definitely help you see your progress.1

I have my loss set for 1 pound/week, but I frequently go over my calorie goal. If I’m really hungry, I eat. As long as I’m below maintenance, I’ll lose over time, and what’s the rush? I like giving myself that flexibility, it feels relaxed and sustainable. My trend is 0.75/week at present. Good luck!1

I lost weight on the slower side. Mostly a pound per week and about 1/2 pound per week for the last 20 pounds or so.
It worked really well for me. I'm an active person and needed the calories.
Also, losing slower has seemed to help the transition to maintenance easier, helped to keep the weight off long-term and minimized loose skin.
Good luck!4 -
I did for most of my journey - took the long and slow rad for my own benefit0

I lost about 1.1 pounds per week for the first six months, then about 0.7 pounds per week for the next six months, then about 0.4 pounds per week for the next six months, and then about 0.25 pounds per week for the last six months. It worked fine. You have to be a lot more careful about logging carefully if you're going to maintain a small deficit, though.2
