I've started counting calories and eating healthy, and I'd like to preplan my meals to save time. I'm not sure about how many calories I should be consuming at each meal or save for healthy snacks. Does anyone have a general guide of how many I should set aside? Also what should I be eating for breakfast as I know it's an important meal.

edit: I forgot to mention that I should be having around 1200 calories a day

How many meals per day? Snacks? I eat 5-6 times a day and try to stick near 200-300 calories though I go lower on the second and fourth meals, so they're more snacks than anything.

I try to keep my meals evened out through the day but it sometimes varies. I do 300 x 3 meals and 100 x 3 snacks. But it can be 200 at breakfast, 180 first snack. 320 for lunch and 80 for second snack and so on.... you should try to fuel your body all day long so you don't hit a starvation mode. I try to get all my calories in by 9pm...no late night snacking

I don't preplan meals. I eat what I fancy and if I eat 500cals for breakfast, I just ttake that off my daily allowance. Also, my husband is the predominant cook and so evening meals tend to be hearty affairs (but all fresh and seldom pre-processed)

I don't snack now as it was snacking and grazing that got me into this blubberous state that I now find myself, but I've found having grapes handy take the edge off (although I'm sure it's mostly psychological  )

I think you sometimes need to listen to your body and eat accordinly. And I really mean LISTEN. Cravings are only that and if you busy yourself for 5-10mins, they'll soon pass.... or chew on a celery stick, a few grapes, have an apple. And keep things balanced and sensible. Deprivation can kill motivation and a little of what you fancy (within reasonable guidelines) does you good.

OMG.... I cannot believe I just said that  There was a time when I'd just raid the fridge for some choclate or woolf down half a packet of Choco-Leibnitz or a sleeve of Jaffa Cakes... without even pausing for breath. Now I've just advised someone to eat fruit & veg :noway:

Anyway... welcome to MFP.... you're among friends :flowerforyou:

Thanks very much for the advice guys I'll try and take it all into account when I'm sorting our my meals. Also I have to watch my portion control as I've found it can get a little out of hand x
