Down here in Tasmania, I've coined a phrase: Tasmanian Flat. Tasmanian Flat is different from Manitoba Flat aka pancake flat or Kansas Flat aka gently rolling hills.

    I do a calculation:

    Metres of climbing/(Distance in km * 100) * 100.

So if a ride has 1000 metres of climbing over 100 km ...

    (1000/100,000) * 100 = 1.

A ride that is a 1 or less is "Tasmanian Flat" :):)

I go on to use that calculation to determine if I am going to be able to do a ride. At one time about 18 months ago, I could do short rides up and slightly over a 2, and longer rides at 1.5. These days, I have to stick to Tasmanian Flat rides.

    100 * 100 = 10,000 not 100,000

    (748 / 8,446) * 100 = 8.86

or do you mean distance * 1,000

    (748 / 84,460) * 100 = 0.89

It is a mostly flat ride. There is one nasty climb if you do it in the other direction though.

    Sorry ...

    This:

    (748 / 84,460) * 100 = 0.89

As for that climb on the way back ... it looks like it would start at 71 km and finish at 64 km = 7 km, is that about right? And it goes up from about 40 metres to 250 metres = 210 metres.

(210 metres/7000) = 3. Yep, that's a climb! I wouldn't want that for anything more than 7 km, and I might be off and pushing for a kilometer or so.

You'll like this one #Machka9, part of today's 80km ride. I get 7.6 on your scale.

If that's only cat3 I need to find me a cat1 to test myself on. (Or break myself on, more likely).
