Too Many Carbs Cause Headaches?

Hello!

I’ve noticed that almost every time I come to my in-laws for the weekend, I get a major headache. I thought it was caffeine withdrawal, but even after a cup of coffee or a few cups of tea, it doesn’t go away so I’m wondering if there’s a different reason. The only other things that change are sleeping on a different (softer) bed and eating a ton more carbs & less protein than I normally do while I’m at their house—they typically order pizza or have pasta when we visit and then have French toast or bagels for breakfast and lots of other carb-heavy foods. I’ve read about low carb giving people headaches but can eating too many carbs also cause headaches?

I’d third the bed - I travel with my pillow because of that

I suffer from migraines and sleep changes are one of my most frequent triggers. I’d also blame the bed.

I'm another who would blame the bed (and other sleep changes) over carbs.

It's highly unlikely for an entire macro to be a headache trigger. It's usually a specific food/non-food trigger. I get tension headaches so stress is one of the triggers. Stress isn't necessarily caused by negative emotions, things like travel and change of routine are stressful. Also, when I sleep funny the tension in my neck causes a headache that lasts a few days. I sometimes get headaches when I change my sleep pattern or when the weather changes suddenly for some reason.

Is it possible to take your pillow with you? At least you will rule the pillow out if that's not it.

You don't want to be there, your body is letting you know. Talk to a professional.

Had to laugh at all the “blame the in-laws” sentiments but the bed is pretty likely. Just wasn’t sure if extra sugar could cause headaches too.

If too many carbs causes headaches, I should be flat on my back with a non-stop killer splitting headache that won’t go away.

Jest aside, I suppose anything is possible.
