Hi
I’m breastfeeding my second child (8 weeks old). Does anyone have any reliable info I can use to educate myself on this topic? Also, I suppose my macro/kj goals would be a bit different to normal, can anyone help with this?

I worked out a formula to calculate cal burnt:
Cal burnt=(20 x oz of milk) ÷0.8 - basal
Basal = 300cal (0-3 months)
400cal (4-6months)
500cal (6months +)
You'll need to estimate your child's consumption you can do this by weighing B4 and after feed or if you have a pump and they only drain one boob you can approximate by pumping the other.
The basal is because your metabolism slows to accommodate feeding your baby. I have the formula in terms of mls too. For me I express an extra litre per day to freeze on top of my 3 week old having 100-150ml feeds 4 to 5 times a day. But I'm storing for her later so I don't have to feed as long but not need to use formula.1 -
I must add, all websites warned about trying to lose too much weight while feeding as it my risk your supply. I have a massive oversupply so can get away with it but just be careful, you don't want to have a hungry baby!0

Thanks so much! No problems with supply here0

I didn't do any dieting at all while I was breastfeeding but still went down to my lowest weight ever -- 103 pounds.
Everyone is different, but for me it was a rare time when I didn't have to worry and could eat anything I wanted.1 -
I put on and kept some weight after my first and am heavier still, I think I just need something to keep me accountable when it comes to my food intake and quality of food.0

General advice I've seen when you're exclusively breastfeeding is to eat at your maintenance and let breastfeeding create your deficit (on average it seems to create about a 500cal deficit). And to eat back a portion of any significant exercise calories.1

Kellymom.com is a great resource for breastfeeding mothers. Here is a link to their article on weight loss while breastfeeding: https://kellymom.com/nutrition/mothers-diet/mom-weightloss/0
