    Weather anxiety!

After record breaking warm Easter weather in southern England it's now gone downhill and looks awful for my organised ride on Saturday. If it's going to be 5hrs of wet and cold misery don't think I'll bother.

It's a shame as otherwise both me and the bike are ready. Did a solo 100km on Sunday and was a little disappointed not to hit my goal pace so did another one on Tuesday and did hit my 17mph desired pace despite being held up by heavy traffic.

A bike maintenance session of adjusting the gears, deep cleaning the chain and fitting a new front tyre has restored it to running smoothly and cornering nicely.

Oh, no! That's terrible, @sijomial 😥 The worst thing about organized rides is that once they're organized, they're immobile. Sadly, if the weather is too nasty to actually enjoy your ride, there really isn't any point. Hopefully the bad weather will hold off a day or two. If not, take the day off and go out solo on a day when the weather is more pleasant. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you. The weatherman is often wrong; perhaps Saturday will surprise you?

Good luck with the weather and your ride. It the worst happens, at least you now have a freshly cleaned, adjusted, and lubricated bike!

First ride in a few weeks and first with my children since my rubbish ride to the park last month. Air in the tires did the trick, I'm back to riding my brakes so I don't outstrip them terribly.

    4/25: 6.18 miles

    @sharondesfor935

You were spot on with the "immobile" comment!

The event was cancelled as the forecast got even worse with winds of over 40mph being predicted.
Got the news while I was out today having a gentle spin to keep my legs fresh so thought might as go for it as nothing to save my legs for.
Hit some nice PR's on the way back on segments I've ridden 160+ times so looks like my preparation for the event that never was got me in decent condition.

I've got the routes saved and downloaded to my Garmin so I'll ride them solo at some stage.

@sijomial I'm sorry your ride was cancelled, but better to be safe, yes?

I think you're sharing your weather with Chicago. When I checked the forecast this morning, our weather is expected to deteriorate rapidly. Tomorrow is now going to get colder by the hour, with rain turning to snow. Brr. So I raced through my work today to try to fit in my "long" ride. The sad saga of that follows.

Remember, my goal was 15 miles this weekend. I rode until my bike computer said 15 miles (and barely got back in time for my son's school bus.) But MapMyRide told me I'd only gone 13.7 miles! Uh-oh, I think it's time to recalibrate my computer.

13.67 miles, 95 minutes, average speed 8.6 mph.

In defense of my sad pace, the new trail I tried out was inadvertently much more technical than I anticipated. The first six miles were unpaved and multi-purpose. Lots of deep ruts and hoofprints that had solidified after the last rain. Plus an 18 mph headwind/crosswind with gusts of 30 mph. I rarely got over 7 mph on that section. Not a trail I will take again, at least not on my road bike. 😳

After that, the trail was paved, but I only got another couple of miles before I had to turn around to get home for the bus. I took actual roads coming home, plus that 18 mph wind was now at my back! Those miles were mostly around 12-15 mph.

Last ten minutes I just spent working on technical stuff: slow circles, figure eights, cloverleafs.

One really good thing did happen, though. I've been fighting to lean my turns instead of turning the front wheel. I know the why and the how, I just couldn't make it work. Suddenly around mile 8 today, it just happened! I was able to consistently lean my bike into the turns and keep my front wheel straight. Whew, that's such a relief.

So I'm putting the bike back on the trainer for the next week or so until the weather clears. Not as much fun, but it is still April, after all.

Four decent rides this week despite Storm Hannah disrupting my plans.
148 miles for the week and closing in on 600 miles for April.

Chilly ride today but rode a nice long, but not too extreme, climb through woods full of bluebells.

I fixed my bike computer, yay! Recalibrated the odo/speedo so it's accurate for my wheel size (apparently changing the battery made it decide that I had bigger wheels?) AND got the cadence sensor working! No idea how I fixed that, but there was cleaning and wiggling involved.

So in honor of my freshly working computer, and because I have a personal day today, I tried again on the long ride. Not sure an indoor ride on the trainer really counts, but at least I got some seat time.

16 miles, 84 minutes, average speed 11.4 mph, average cadence 65 rpm. Although, to be honest, my cadence was all over the place from 50-70 rpm - something new to work on.

I think, ultimately, my goal for this summer is to be able to comfortably and consistently ride 30+ miles. All the fun routes from my old triathlon days were in the 30-60 mile range. I'd like to be able to do those again.

I didn't actually record most of my rides this month but did do some riding. Spent a couple days playing on some built jumps and ramps prepping for a trip to Moab. I spent a long weekend at a Trek Dirt Series camp in Moab, and rode some trails with some fabulous ladies. Got back here to Montana and the weather has been pretty miserable.

Got one mountain bike ride in and one road ride after we got back. Here's to a nicer May, even though we have snow in our forecast for tomorrow!

April 6 - 10.9 miles trail (The Maiden Voyage of my new bike)
April 12 - 4.7 miles trail in Moab
April 13/14 - Trek Dirt Series (miles unknown)
April 19 - 4 miles playing on the rocks
    April 27 - 19 miles road

Gratuitous picture of my new ride in Moab!

Today was a good end to a good cycling month, 625 miles and 38hrs is a lot for me so early in the year.

Very hilly ride today including a beast that hits 19% gradient before "easing off" to "only 13%" before ramping up again to 17%.

A 72 hour month...a lot inside so miles are pointless to track. First race this Friday.

Well, my April held 9 rides, for a total of 90.32 miles and 8.5 hours, including both real rides and indoor trainer time.

Although I'm sure my actual mileage is probably about 6 miles less, to account for any indoor rides before I recalibrated my bike computer.

Let's see if I can get to 150 miles in May!
