Exercise with an Injury

I could really use sound advice from people who are experienced with working out.

I have a back injury in the lower back that also affects my right hip. It's quite painful at times- like today and the past week. I was told I have a compressed disc and to be very careful. I was injured about 10 years or so ago. It flares up but lately, its flared up more after working out.

My workouts include low impact things like the rowing machine, walking on the treadmill and the recumbent bike. I work my arms out with weights and have used the thigh machines.

It seems to be flaring more every time I work out.

Any ideas on what I can do that won't aggravate it?

I would bet a physical therapist could check out your back and make expert recommendations. A rehab plan to reduce how often it bothers you and an exercise plan to keep you healthy. Good luck!

agree sees a specialist or get advice from a medical professional that understands your injuries and can safely recommend appropriate exercise. otherwise you risk aggravating the situation.

Also make sure you're using the rowing machine correctly (most people aren't). Not using correct form will only cause and/or exacerbate injuries. Concept2 has some good videos here.
