Would you consider this binge eating?

I have been eating in calorie deficient to lose the last 10 pounds and the weight has been coming off. My clothes feels lighter
However, yesterday we had a barbeque at work.I initially planned to fit the burger in my calorie goal but I fell off the wagon. And ended up eating 2 hamburgers and 3 hot dogs. I ended up in calorie surplus of 800 over.
Today I have mild like period cramps like my period is coming but then it's slightly different..
Did I over did it?

I feel awful the next day after over-eating too.
You'll be okay.2 -
Would I call that a binge - no.
Did you over do it? Depends on your definition of over doing it. You ate more calories than your goal and you ate to the point of discomfort so yeah, that’s over doing it I suppose.
Now, is it something to be particularly concerned about? Probably not. You might want to think about why you did it. You said you’ve been eating in a calorie deficit - is your deficit too aggressive and/or have you cut out foods that you enjoy in order to achieve your weight loss goals?
Extreme Restriction can be difficult to sustain and really is unnecessary. Maybe consider if your calorie target is reasonable for your overall goal - with 10 lbs to lose you should be aiming for about 0.5 lb/week which is a 250 calorie deficit from your maintenance. Is that what you're set at?
Keep in mind you may see a spike in the scale from excess sodium (hot dogs) but this is temporary water weight.
I would move on and consider my overall goals and not worry about the BBQ.3 -

Yes, my goal is set to lose 0 .5 a week and I usually eat what I want but in small quantity so it can fit in my calorie goal, if it's high calorie food. Why I did it? Sometimes I feel like I need a break from the stress of counting calories and weighing food. I want to have days once a month when I can eat whatever I want without tracking like old times. Then get back on track the next day.
I miss eating like that. But unfortunately it's easy to go over and start gaining weight again. Even my maintenance calories don't seem to be that much to not go over if I'm not tracking what I'm eating

I understand "binge" is a pretty loaded term and can mean pretty different things to different people, based on their eating habits, histories, etc.
For me, yes, that would be a binge. I bought 3 dark Kit Kats on sale one day last month and ate all 3 of them in the afternoon even though I had a normal lunch and it put me over by 600 calories from what I'd planned that day. For me it was a binge because I didn't plan it and lost control regarding the candy. I knew better, and I felt bad about it and mildly embarrassed. I believe it happened primarily because I'd been undereating slightly for several days and hadn't had as many small treats as usual. I have also had this happen when I am under a TON of stress. I try to plan to avoid this sort of thing happening. I also should have purchased just 1 Kit Kat at full price.
You just move on though and try to handle it differently next time.3 -
I wouldn't consider it a binge. I'd simply call that eating over your caloric goal.
I associate binges with emotional eating and complete loss of self control. Like, consuming so much food in a short span of time, to the point of physical discomfort. And even though your body is telling you to stop, you don't because you're feeling angry, sad, stressed, etc.4 -
I agree with @stricklee11. I see binge thrown around a lot on here by people who just overate or ate something unplanned or what they consider "junk food". To me there is a big difference between overeating and a binge. A binge from my understanding is usually done in secret, the person is ashamed but has no control and while I guess it doesn't have to be massive calories I think of it as someone eating a whole pizza, followed by a half-gallon of ice cream, a dozen donuts and a bag of chips until they feel absolutely sick. It sounded like you just mentally said F-it, I want to let loose for a day.5

It's all in context imho... when I eat 500 grams of blueberries with 16oz of low fat yogurt a binge? Most people would say yea. For me, it's just a snack. Learn something here. How you felt afterwards? What drove you to eat that much? Did you restrict all day? Was the food just that Hyperpalitable? Was it a social situation where people around you were overeating? As a professional once told me... it's far harder to overeat on whole fruits and veg. Some hyperprocessed food it just made for us to overeat on. If you look at what "most" people "binge" on, it's not USUALLY less calorie dense Hyperpalitable foods. I will never tell anyone to restrict what they eat, but maybe try limiting it. Jmho best wishes0
