Polar A370

I have the polar a370 and up until a week ago I really never got negative calorie adjustment even though I had then turned on. Then a week ago there was an issue with the calorie adjustment to which MFP fixed it and now they are working. Issue I have now is if I do a workout with the heart rate monitor in a workout mode, it records calories burned fine. When I sync with MFP I get the + calories if it took me over my daily goal which is cool but then I see a negative calorie adjustment because my steps are low. If I am lifting then I'm not walking but after a workout I'm not going for a five Mile Walk.
So question is with a device that monitors heart rate to record activity, how important are steps or should I turn off recording steps in MFP?
