Period Problems

First off sorry if this is in the wrong section, I have NO idea where I should post this.
To begin, the first time I ever started working out daily I couldn't get off my period so I was put on the pill. That was when I was 13. Anytime I'm not on the pill I will stay on my period for months, longest being 7 months. Well, I'm on the pill of course to fix that problem. Also, ANYTIME I start working out even when on the pill I will start and stay on my period. I told my doctor and he simply said "just exercise". I understand I need to exercise to be healthy and I'm pushing myself through with continuing to do so. However, no one, not even my doctor has given me any advice on why I stay on my period when I work out. He sort of smiled and said "just exercise". WTH?! Has anyone else ever had this problem? If so, did your doctor actually give you a reason to why it happens?

that is really really odd. is this a family doctor of a Gyno?0

I would search for another doctor0

Its a family doctor. I don't have any money for another doctor. Since my husband is in the military I was assigned a doctor and to be honest, he's never helpful!0

I think I would search for a new doctor. I would also see about changing your birth control. Maybe the depo provera shot would help. I would seek a second opinion. Not sure how that works in the military though. Good luck.0

If you are continually bleeding, then it is not a `period`. You can have a serious iron defficiency if it carries on.
If it is caused by exercise then, you need some medical help.
My advice would be stop exercising and seek help from a gyno. This is certainly not normal and I would seek help sooner rather than later hun x0 -
You can get exams and medical help from Planned Parenthood clinics, nearly every town has one. The price is based on your income, so it is affordable.0

I would google the heck outta that and print off stuff and take it to him.0

I completely agree. This is not normal, I would ask him for a referral, then you may be able to get a specialist through the military without having to pay out of pocket for one.0 -
I have been slightly anemic, recently actually. The same doctor gave me iron pills to take for 3 months and all was normal I guess, because he never called back after my last blood test. That was about 2.5months ago. Also, he changed my birth control pills twice. Same difference between all. I don't really want the depo shot because of the weight gain it causes so many people. My sister, who is tiny, gained weight and had stomach pains. A friend gained LOTS of weight. The women on my mom's side have problems a lot with their periods and being overweight. Including my mom. However, she doesn't have the exercise=bleeding problem. I am so tired of this. It is why I give up exercising. I know there has to be something wrong. Like I said before though, I have no money right now. We are having to move home soon & have to save money to make it home bc my husband is seperating from the military for failing his run in his pt test. I guess I can TRY to see a different doctor, but it'd have to be within the same group at the hospital I go to now. I know I'm griping...I'm just so frustrated with not getting help.0

The miltary has providers who have GYN training. I had 2 babies while being miltary and I saw OB/GYN doctors, they also have women serving who need GYN care. You can ask your current provider to refer you to one. If he ( I assume it's a he because of how he reacted to you telling him you had your period all the time) won't refer you then ask a nurse how to get a referal to one. You should be able to get a 2nd opinion. Or take your husband with you to the appt and have him in the room when you talk to the provider. I don't mean to be rude but sometimes you can get futher if he's there to back you up and let the provider know that this is a real problem. Not just a minor inconvience.0

That sounds more serious than a period. Definitely see another doctor.0

True...I will start searching for a nearby clinic. Maybe that would be helpful since its outside of the same hospital.0

Honestly, the doctor was male and the nurses were female and they ALL acted the same. My husband was in the room. I didn't ask for a referral though. I was just confused and stopped exercising. But now I am driven to succeed in this new weight loss journey and I have been keeping with it.
Thank you for everyone's advice.0 -
I can't think of any reason for exercise to cause you start your period. I don't know much about PCOS, but maybe you have cysts and they're rupturing? Do you have pain when you start bleeding while/after working out? (Again, not a doctor, so anyone with a medical background feel free to call me on my bull**** if thats what it is)0
-
I'd definitely ask your doctor about PCOS. If he refuses to talk to you about it, I'd be ask to be referred to a Ob/Gyn so they can see if you have something causing your period to stay around for so long. Do you have any other symptoms that accompany the bleeding?0

You can't see a gyno instead of family doctor because of insurance? Maybe planned parenthood or something.. I don't care what peoples opinions are of the place, I've had nothing but a good experience. I actually prefer to go there instead of making an appt at my gyno 2 months in advance.
I never had that problem, however... when I was put on certain BCP I would have my period for longer than I ever have and heavier. I just can't handle low dose BCP. I need something higher dose.
Have you looked into Seasonique?? Not sure if it will help, but if it can stop your period for a few months at a time.. idk.
Definitely try to go to a clinic or to another doctor.. that specialized in womens care.0 -
No, I can't see a gyno because when I tried to make an appointment with one they said no, you need family practice. The majority of the time I feel okay, cramps every now and then, fatigue when it goes on long enough, and of course cranky. I've had large clots in the past (not when exercising) that would cause me to be in tears for hours until they came out. One day I had 5 quarter size and bigger. That was when I went to be put back on birth control and told him about all my other problems. He just nodded, said to exercise and sent me on my way. He wouldn't even do a physical. The doctors at this base are lazy as hell, or maybe its just my doctor. I did just make an appointment and asked for someone different. I won't be in til the 14th next month though. If this new doctor doesnt help than I will try and see a gyno. & I used to go to family planning clinics all the time. I just started going to this hospital sense we've gotten married and it's free.0
