Can't Eat, Sleep or Run Away

I'm in agony. I was doing fine with my diet adjustment for like three weeks and then suddenly my digestion shut down and I can't rely on OTC drugs anymore. My stomach hurts like crazy. Food is not happening.

I don't know what I did wrong but I'm going to the doctor tonight. That's no big deal for most people but I'm so friggin scared of doctors I can't even think straight right now. I didn't sleep. I keep replaying things in my head.

I'm never gonna lose all this weight. The universe hates me. Every time I try to make some positive change it backfires. I'm just not allowed success.

I am sorry for whatever you're going through. Please discuss these concerns with your doctor. Maybe you would also consider talking to a metal health professional. The universe doesn't hate you... You get out of life what you put in. :)

Well, it seems believing in an indifferent universe would be viewed as optimistic in comparison.

Digestion issues might be no fun, and unfortunately, stressing on them can just exacerbate the issues - stress signals lowering digestion rates.
I myself had a time where my work was putting stress on, long hours for a special project, and they were giving out free food that wasn't anything like what I'd been losing on, and I ended up with digestion issues for a week or two. It cleared and I resumed losing weight. Chances are you can get through this.

Your fear of the Dr is just something in your head right now. It isn’t real. You don’t know what will happen. Your brain, out of habit, is filling in the blank with something bad.

Try this- picture yourself at the Dr and he’s telling you everything is basically ok. You don’t really know what’s going to happen. But if your brain is going to fill in the blank, fill it with something good.

Likewise the outcome of your weight loss efforts. We can’t really stop our brains. People spend years practicing meditation just to get a few moments of quiet. But because our brains can’t stop, they put out lots of nonsense. Fortunately not all nonsense. But a lot. Much of which is the nutty idea that our brains know the future.

The future, by its nature, is unknown. That may be a bit unsettling, but it’s how it is. That future catastrophe is just an unpleasant fantasy.

Well, not quite. The only time I was ever assaulted was by a doctor during an unnecessary procedure, and the last specialist I saw called me disgusting and pathetic. I've been having PTSD style flashbacks and that is some pretty legit fear. Even though I don't know for sure what will happen today, the word No doesn't seem to apply to medical staff and that terrifies me.

But there's some concern I may have an ulcer or appendix problem so I've gotta.

I would (and do) choose only female medical professionals.

If it is a situation where you have to disrobe, ask for a second female to be in the room while the exam is happening.

"No," does apply. I've said no many times to medical people. They aren't gods, and you are free to leave (and report them) at any time.

*ets: You can also take a safe person with you - a female friend or family member. Take them into the exam with you.

Exactly this. It may require you being more forceful than you are comfortable with, but you have the right to request a witness, say no to anything they suggest, and get up and leave.

Is there someone in your life you trust who can go with you? A friend or family member?

ETA: I'm so sorry you had those experiences and have had your faith in the medical profession be so thoroughly destroyed! We put a lot of trust in medical staff and it can be utterly devastating when some of them turn out to be uncaring or nasty.

No does apply to medical professionals. It applies to everyone. Certainly remember that in any situation.

Doctors are people, like you & I; not gods. Try not to let the past darken your future, if possible, and remember that No is always an option. A female doctor is a good suggestion. Please don't avoid doctors. Your health is too important.

Kudos to you for going for an appointment today.

OP, doctors can be scary and PTSD is real. I'm sorry your experiences have been so bad. My advice is to take a trusted friend or family member with you, as others have mentioned. They can be there every step of the way. Also, there's nothing wrong with shopping around for a practitioner who is trauma - informed and a good fit for you.

Losing weight sustainably requires enormous trust in yourself and the ability to reach out for help when it's needed. Hope you feel better soon.
